Where are you located? I know a seamstress in Northern California who turns out just amazing work.

For something on Ebay, I would look at the feedback. I have heard many poor things about Chinese manufacturers and a few good things about them too. Look at the feedback listing. If it is below, say, 99% I would look at the comments on negative or neutral reviews and see what they say, as well as what the responses were.

However, I think if the option for the original dress is in your budget then that would be my preferred choice. That way you have the guarantee that the dress is the one you want and that it will be of appropriate quality.

I have a couple of tips for you.

First, have you tried on similar dresses?  I think the biggest risk is you may not like the dress, if you are willing to take that risk I say go for it, espically if you aren’t spending that much $ and you could buy another dress if you absoluetly hate it.

Second, go to a seamstress to have your measurements taken. You will be most likely need alterations once you receive the dress anyways.  You may have to have the dress pressed after you recieve it, they obviously ship it in the smallest package they have.  You should also realize that the petticoat may be a huge part of dress so if you try it on once you receive it without this you won’t be getting the full affect.  Your seamstress may be able to make a petticoat/slip for you.

If you are ok with all of this, go for it!

Definitely check out the business before buying. I didn’t get a China-made dress but one made by a business that supposedly specialized in knock-offs – Gioavonni’s Bridal in Tenessee. It turned out HORRIBLY and I had to get another dress. So in an effort to save money I actually threw several hundred dollars away. Check customer reviews but NOT on the business’ web site as they will only post good reviews of course. See if there is a BBB report on them before ordering. If everything checks out, get really good measurements and order away!
