If you want to break the ice, you can buy conversation cards and put a small stack on each table. You can get them at Amazon or http://www.tabletopics.com.  They have clever questions like “what movie made you laugh till you cried” or “if you could choose the seven wonders of the world, what would you pick”, nothing racy and nothing political. Then people read the question and actually start talking to each other during dinner and having a conversation, which is pretty much the definition of breaking the ice, as opposed to sitting silently watching you and the groom play the shoe game.

I think the dragon dance is a great idea. I’ve been to several Chinese weddings that had those and they were great.
