New England in the fall, I’d personally wear a long dress with a nice cardigan. If dresses aren’t your thing, perhaps a nice sweater with dress pants.

azaleapetunia :  Victorian or casual?  That’s going to be a weird mishmash for guests.  I probably wouldn’t try to conform to either because it’s all going to look pretty stupid, so why bother? – just a long skirt, nice top (or a dressy maxi) and a cardigan so I didn’t freeze my butt off.

azaleapetunia :  If you want to play along with the Victorian theme, something like this might work:

An outdoor reception in New England at the end of October? Unless they plan on heated tents, a warm coat?

Guests are adults who should be trusted to dress themselves. Wear what is appropriate to the occasion, the time of day and the weather. Don’t feel any pressure to buy or rent anything Victorian. I realize it is not required but IMO it’s an imposition to even suggest.

I’d probably wear dress pants and a sweater or jacket or a warm dress with tights and boots.

If your wardrobe permits, i would try to wear something Victorian-inspired semi casual, because themes are fun! I’d go for something like a standing collar button up blouse, long wool skirt, and tall boots, with a wind resistant updo like a tight bun.

I would wear something like this with a black jacket and tights, I think!
