Please help! I have a wedding coming up end of next month and no clue what to wear. It will be outdoors with reception in a tent by the water (read: windy) in New England. The invitation says Victorian or casual attire.
What would you wear?!

New England in the fall, I’d personally wear a long dress with a nice cardigan. If dresses aren’t your thing, perhaps a nice sweater with dress pants.

azaleapetunia : Victorian or casual? That’s going to be a weird mishmash for guests. I probably wouldn’t try to conform to either because it’s all going to look pretty stupid, so why bother? – just a long skirt, nice top (or a dressy maxi) and a cardigan so I didn’t freeze my butt off.

azaleapetunia : If you want to play along with the Victorian theme, something like this might work:

An outdoor reception in New England at the end of October? Unless they plan on heated tents, a warm coat?
Guests are adults who should be trusted to dress themselves. Wear what is appropriate to the occasion, the time of day and the weather. Don’t feel any pressure to buy or rent anything Victorian. I realize it is not required but IMO it’s an imposition to even suggest.
I’d probably wear dress pants and a sweater or jacket or a warm dress with tights and boots.

If your wardrobe permits, i would try to wear something Victorian-inspired semi casual, because themes are fun! I’d go for something like a standing collar button up blouse, long wool skirt, and tall boots, with a wind resistant updo like a tight bun.

This wedding is right before Halloween so I think it could be fun to dress up but I am just totally lost where to even start. I don’t want to spend a lot on something I’ll only wear once but I’ll need to buy something because all my skirts and dresses are summery or knee length and I don’t own pants other than jeans or yoga pants. I have one coat I could wear but it is off white with some black on the collar and pockets and I’m guessing that’s a big no.
So where should I start shopping? Maybe thrift stores?
claroquesi : love this inspiration pic! I do have some tall black boots at least!
weddingmaven : I hear the reception will be in a heated tent but ceremony will not, weather permitting. I am less concerned about the cold than I was for another friend’s October wedding that had us in strapless bridesmaid dresses taking pics for an hour by the water! I mean that is totally unrelated but I think this is just the couple’s thing so they are suggesting it as an option. I do not feel imposed upon.
