Haven’t had this happen with guests, but Fiance wanted to plan our wedding around March Madness! Needless to say, it didn’t happen! He also wanted to push our honeymoon back a week so he was in town (and near a tv) for the final play off games!!  Again – not happening buddy!

One thing to consider besides guests not attending, is will your vendors’ staff bail or be unattentive because of the game.  We used to run into this when I’d schedule a big affair in January – if it ended up being on a football playoff date, and especially if our local NFL team was in the playoffs, we’d have issues.  On the guest side, guests would RSVP yes but then not show up.  Bartenders, servers, hotel staff, etc, would call in sick or not show up, or spend too much of their time hovered around the TV and not providing service like they should.

I’m not saying reschedule your wedding, but if this is a big game for people in your area, make sure  the vendors are going to be able to handle staff problems and such.

If you want guests to come that are fans, plan to have a TV someplace & let them know this – we usually had one by the bar, so guests could at least get updates on the game, although this led to some people hanging around it too much.

People complained at my brother’s wedding that he planned it on Parent’s Weekend for one random college (yeah, we were supposed to check that?) and they whined about the college football game not being on.  They ended up turning it on and the men spent half the night in the bar watching the game.  It really annoyed me – thank you for coming to a wedding to watch something that can be recorded.  When we got engaged I said there would be NO TV on and NO football.  Luckily we are getting married in the summer, so it’s not even an issue now, but I totally understand the irritation!  People are wayyyy to obsessed with something they have no personal stake in.  Ughhhh.

I actually planned to have a February wedding, after superbowl, because it’s not going to mess with football season. Then again my fiancé and I are huge fans.

How rude to complain to you, though!

@Mrs.C.to.bee:  Sorry, I just have to comment that FL/GA is a WAY bigger deal than UF/FSU. I’ve been a Gator all my 29 years and the Georgia game is a much bigger deal.

OP, my best friend got married on the day of the Florida-Tennessee game a few years ago. Her own father spent half the reception at the bar downstairs watching the game.

It sucks, but some people LOVE their football. I love it too, but I would just catch Breakfast with the Gators the next day. I can guarantee that my cellphone would be handy during the reception so I could check the score every 5 minutes though.

Whaaat, that is so rude! Why don’t they just record it?

I guess you’ll have to just get used to the comments but maybe you can think of something sort of rude back to just say every time you get that? Not overly rude but make sure they know that you think their concern is selfish and silly.

It might be a cute, considerate idea if you post a DIY scoreboard or have the DJ update your guests. Just a thought!

@TyCharliesgirl:

Seriously? Wow, that’s a new low in my book. Who cares about a stupid football game, they have no say in when you get married and if they care more about a pigskin ball then the most important day of your life then you probably don’t want them there anyway.  Don’t change a thing.

my response would be, “sorry you can’t make it….more food for me”.

I am tired of dealing with people that but sports, excuse me A GAME above all else…

@littlemisst08:  WHAT!!!!!  they can live a few hours without the scores and or watching a game…

I just don’t get people so obsessed with sports who put the “team” ahead of the people in their life….I hope when the inevitable “down times” come to him, they call the “team”  and not me to be at their side…

Everyone who is suggesting people DVR/Tivo the game must not like sports because I don’t know anyone who DVRs a live football game and watches it the next day. As a college football fan I can understand being annoyed but I would never actually complain to the bride.

Ok maybe I would complain if someone scheduled their wedding during the Florida Georgia game.
