We have a family friend officiating our ceremony but I was pretty shocked at the prices before we knew he could do it for us. Try looking on https://weddingful.com/toronto/officiant they often have deals on officiants (and a bunch of other stuff). I think they have a deal for $200 right now.

Ouch, I had no idea it was that expensive. We were going to ask a friend’s mother who is an officiant to do ours, but now I feel like I should price a few others before asking her. My Fiance said there is no way she would charge us since she’s known him since he was a teenager, but I would of couse want to remunerate her. And if she is really expensive….I guess we’ll find someone else? Ugh, too much to think about!

In Alberta they run about the same. I’m not certain how it works in Ontario but in AB it’s super regulated and they keep it very limited how many exist at any time so they can charge a premium.

I’m in California. Our friend got ordained online and was our officiant. We gave him a small stipend (mainly to cover gas and his time).

I’m a funeral director and the honorarium we pay clergy for a funeral is $300. I believe it’s the recommend amount set by the catholic dioses, but most other faiths follow this as well. They don’t demand this fee and will accept less, but it’s usually when the family is lower income. But then again, it’s for a funeral. maybe try posting in the wanted section of kijiji or gobid. But remember you get what you pay for! A good clergy person can make your wedding or being the one thing you hate about the day.

How much is the license? Get me the license and I will marry you for free. Lol! I look very presentable and I am very articulate. I know how stressful weddings can be. And expensive! I’m from here and got married here. So there you go.

Our officiant usually is $200 but since we are (somewhat) regular attendees, it will be $100. He’s amazing, and has one of those voices that is just very soothing…can’t wait!

@birdy88: For me city hall quoted me $250 on top of the $140 licence fee for next year. Through another company I was quoted $450! I personally had thought $200 would be the average range for them considering we don’t want anything custom in the ceremony… but $250 is the cheapest there is for us and they are not very flexible with scheduling at all!

I’m not sure the rules in Canada, but in California we had our friend get ordained so he could do our ceremony, it was free and all done online

I was married in Ottawa..
I don’t want to scare you, but I paid 700.00 for my officiant, and she was incredible and I would definitely do it again, it was worth it.
That being said, I found my officiant via my friend who got married the year before I did. They actually had a friend perfom the officiant duties at the wedding, but in Ontario you can’t just become ordained to perform weddings, so they just essentially hired the officiant to sign papers with the day before. (I also signed the day before, but thats because we didn’t want a ‘signing table’) So coem the wedding day, their friend had written and performed the ceremony for them, and I really don;t think it cost them much at all!

@Sasha2011: An Ontario marriage licence is $140 I believe

This is definitely the one aspect of wedding planning that gave me severe sticker shock. I was hoping for $250 max. Looking moreso like $500 around here. I am in southwestern Ontario and surprisingly Toronto officiants are cheaper then here.

it justblows my mind because , they used to do it for free and you give them a donation for their church or whatnot …. it all jut seems a money grab now and not out of goodness of hearts.

Good morning, I read your post on the board while looking for wedding officant info and was wondering if it wouldn’t be too much trouble to ask you if I could use you as a reference to receive the $50 off to obtain a wedding officiant through allseasons weddings. I’d understand if you’d rather not. Thank you. My email address is [email protected]

I’m using a family friend in the GTA, but even with him being a friend it’ll end up costing me about $350+ since we’re paying for their accommodation for 2 nights as the wedding is a few hours drive away. We’re putting him and his wife up in a nice inn for the weekend so that they are stress free plus getting him a thank you gift on top of that, so even with a friend conducting the ceremony it doesn’t end up being any less expensive!
And the 10-20 minute ceremony isn’t really what you’re paying the bulk of themoney for. It’s the preparation and organization time that goes into the ceremony that is where the cost adds up. A good officiant will have a well written and meaningful script that they use that they’ve spend time and effort on!
