Ugh. What a mess!

When is the next time you’re going to see them at a family event? Maybe he’s already deleted the multiples, or just picked the very best! And now doesn’t know how to tell you.

How much are his 5x7s? I might just buy one of each and call it a day…

Honestly, I’d trust him that he chose the best pictures, and 279 is a LOT. Altogether, that would around 1,500 photos for you to look through, trust him that he took out all the ones where you weren’t looking at the camera, you had a weird face or something.

You really do want the top 300. Our engagement pictures, she took almost 1,000 and gave us rights to like, 300, some of which are eh and some are amazing! Most photography packages include only a couple hundred optimized images, I wouldn’t worry about this.

You have no contract and he’s family.  It’s already a recipe for disaster.  Be happy with what you have.  For what it’s worth, no professional would show you all images taken either.

@continuumphotography:  +1, no pro would have given you all the shots either. It’s a shame you had a miscommunication with him, by ALL he was probably thinking you wanted all the shots he delivered on a DVD, which you got. I’m sure he didn’t mean everything he took.

My sister and I were talking about this last night, she’s a photographer and helping me find mine (I’m not having family shoot my wedding, too many possible problems).  She said that when the bride is walking she will basically hold the button and take a series of 10-15 shots so she’s pretty much guarteed 2-3 good ones and 10 throw aways where the bride is blinking etc.  You don’t need those photos.  She, on average, gives a couple 40-50 photos for every hour she shoots (that’s a lot of pictures).  There will usually be several that are similar, multiple versions of the same shot, but she does take out the blinky ones, or the unflattering ones etc.

If he gave you 279 pictures, I’d let it go. I think you feel you must see everything because you didn’t trust him to have picked the best shots. Please trust him. You didn’t need to see all the throw-aways from the other family events. If he indeed gave you 279 pictures, then let it go and trust that he did his job–or you might cause him to start regretting doing the work for you.

I think given that you got 279 photos, I’d let it go. If you’re happy with the quality of what he gave you, don’t let the fact that you haven’t seen “everything” taint how you feel about him or your wedding images. FWIW, like others mentioned, no pro is going to show you all images taken. It’s just not how it done. I personally deliver an average of around 100 finished images per hour of the wedding. So a 5 hour wedding would average around 500 images. That being said, said forumla probably wouldn’t hold true for you because having a family member shooting means they are doing a lot more socializing than a paid professional. I would venture to say that you would probably recieve half that number in final shots – so assuming your cousin was “shooting” for 5 hours, that number seems about right.

I know we say it all the time, and it’s certainly not to knock your choie to hire your non-pro cousin, but I sincerely wish we could take all these threads and put them into one for brides to read. Many many bees have the same outcome as you, and it’s really a shame, because hiring family almost always turns out the same way. It’s personally one of the reasons I rarely, if ever, shoot a family wedding becuase it’s VERY hard for me to do my job with so many people I know wanting to stop me and chat.
