Wedding photography is an entirely different dynamic than family pictures or sentior pictures. That’s just posing people, it’s not capturing important moments.

Personally, it was very important to me to have someone who had experience shooting weddings. Someone who knows what shots are important and how to get them. Someone who will know how to work around my guests.

But it’s really up to you. I would say it’s taking more of a risk than you would be with a professional photographer, although you absolutely shouldn’t go with the one who did you engagement photos.

It’s also not all about how much you spend. Look for someone who has experience and you have a great connection with.

mariah811 :  You don’t want to cheap out on you’re photographer. Cheap out on anything else. You’re photo are you’re memories. I would go with a photgrapher who’s done weddings before. With that being said you don’t have to pay 5 grand for a photographer either.

I’d hire a wedding photog. Weddings are a different animal with lots of emotions and time crunches. Have you checked out out thumbtack? Sometimes you can get good deals on there. Check reviews and work carefully before booking of course.

Wedding (and any ‘live’ photos) are totally different than posed family shots. Do you want all your wedding pics to look like this?

Another option is flying someone in from out of town (depending on where you live). I’m in Northern CA and most photogs near me are in the $3500-5000 range (much higher if you go to the bay area). A friend of mine just got married and flew in some amazing, very reputable, photog from Oregon and saved thousands. Even with his flight & hotel she was still around the $2000 mark and he was incredible!

I’d hire a professional wedding photographer, but different than the one who did your engagements. Our photographer was wonderful, and she travels!

Here’s a few pictures that our photographer did for our engagement session.  They turned out beautiful.   His name is Ken Love Photography.  He’s out of Akron, OH but I think he travels, too.
