My fiancée is pretty apathetic about our wedding arrangements (says he’ll be happy with anything, etc.) so I was surprised and excited by his enthusiasm for one of the photographers we interviewed. I had some misgivings, because there was a clear language barrier, but my fiancée really like his style of photography and the packages he offered, so we decided to go with this photographer. We signed the contract and my fiancée, who is paying for the photography, made the down payment (1/3 of the total cost.) We were told in the interview that the studio owner, the one my fiancée really liked, was more expensive than other photographers, so we went ahead and paid the premium to have him, specifically. Last Wednesday night, right before Thanksgiving, I got an email from the photographer’s assistant saying that they “found my wedding photographer.” The photographer is from their studio in New York City, but is not the owner, who we thought we would be working with. I was flabbergasted when I received the e-mail, and I want to respond quickly, but I really have no idea what to say or do. The contract only deals with issues of payment, and provides for a replacement photographer if our chosen photographer can’t make it on the wedding day. How do I respond? My fiancée was really confused by all of this, and he is ready to try and cancel the contract if we can’t resolve this. Please help, I feel totally overwhelmed and I want to handle this well.
