Are you doing a first look? How long is your ceremony? Is there a gap between your ceremony and reception? Did you want to be at cocktail hour? How important are getting ready/detail shots for you? Is there any travel time required between your getting ready location, ceremony, reception venue, photo locations, etc?

Our photographer’s standard package is 8 hours but we had an hour-long ceremony, an hour gap between ceremony and reception, and we wanted to be at cocktail hour. We also had some travel involved which ate up probably an hour of the time. For these reasons we added two hours on to have her there for 10 hours, but if we had a quick ceremony with the reception following immediately and no travel, 8 hours would have been fine.

We need more details. When will your ceremony start? When will the reception end? Will you have a first look? Will you want her there for “getting ready” pics? Do you want her there thru the end of the reception?

rozannab :  Totally up to you if you want the photographer there for the whole reception. To me it’s a little OTT and truthfully I’m glad we don’t have photos of us and our messy drunk friends (other than cell phone footage) from the very end of the night! Our photographer left at 10 and our reception ended at 11:30. So you might want to keep her there until 9 or 9:30 (the candids she got of everyone dancing were my favorite pictures!).

It sounds like you can probably get away with 7 or 8 hours, depending on how many pictures you want to take. 10 hours would be too much and 6 wouldn’t be enough. Maybe ask her what she would recommend. Our photographer set the schedule for our whole wedding day (and was also the one who made sure we were sticking to the timeline!). They are generally good at knowing how long all of these things will take and how much time they will need.

When I break down how we spent the time, it was something like:

    Getting Ready/Details Photos: 2 hours

First Look, Bridal Party, Family Photos, Couple Photos: 2 hours

Reception and Ceremony Photos: 4 1/2 hours

So 8 1/2 hours with the rest being travel and downtime. With your ceremony being half an hour shorter than mine, 8 hours would probably be good. But again, if you let your photographer know what types of pictures you want, how many family/bridal party photos you want, etc. she can give you a better idea.

I have the exact same timeline as you! Photography was one of my most important items to splurge on. We booked our photographer for 8 hours (includes a 2nd photographer who is her husband). We were thinking that we would have her from maybe 2:30-10:30. We will be having a first look, but haven’t decided what time we want that to happen

ETA: Everything is happening at 1 location, so no travel during the day

I picked 8 hours because that should be enough time for your getting ready pictures, ceremony, pictures after ceremony and reception.

We had 9 hours with 2 photographers and I feel like 8 would have been plenty, but 6 would have been way too little. So I voted 8!

We are doing 10 hours, 2 photographers. Our ceremony begins at 4:45, we are doing a first look. Our photog will be arriving at around 11:30AM.

We had 1 photographer for 6 hours and it was plenty for us. We got over 500 photos back from her and we loved every one!
