Hi all. My wedding is July 19th 2014 and my fiance and i dont want any engagement photos done. My sister who is my Maid/Matron of Honor did my maternity photos and did a wonderful job.We are going to ask her to do them. Just need some insight when you put your deposits down for them and how close to the wedding they should be booked. Just dont know when to start looking for a photographer.Thank you.

It depends on your area. I booked mine about 10 months out so I would start narrowing down your choices now.

@isabelle_86: It depends on your locations market saturation. I’m getting married September 2014 and booked my florist in May 2013. We loved her work (and her) and wanted to ensure we got our pick of photographers. Some of my friends who took a more laid back attitude are now scrambling because the photographers they liked are booked. My photography contract is about $5,000 and we put down 1/3 of the total contract value.

I booked ours 8 months out but she wasn’t one of the top end high demand photographers for my area. I would suggest 12 months out, so soon for you!

Start looking now, and book right away when you find someone whose photos you enjoy and that you click with socially.
Good photographers (especially good AND inexpensive ones) book up quickly. We got engaged in April of this year; I knew which photography team I wanted, but they were already booked for our date in late May 2014. I looked around a LOT right after that, and the photographer we ended up with almost got booked before we got our deposit in! We ended up booking about a year in advance.

@isabelle_86: we booked ours 13 months in advance, in the midwest.

We booked ours over a year out (about 14 months). My original first choice was already booked for our date 17 months out (and we’re getting married on a Friday in April!).

I did ours 13 months out. Right after I booked the venue. I wanted choices and I didn’t want to have to pick from the leftover ones. I would start looking now and book when you find the one that is your favorite.

We booked our photographer a year and a half in advance, Toronto is a big wedding market and good wedding photographers (and vendors) book up far in advance.

A year to year and a half is totally normal. We looked online first, went to a couple of wedding shows where we knew our top picks would have a booth and looked at albums. Once we got that narrowed down, we scheduled a meeting with our favorite, and ended up booking her the night of the meeting. I’m glad we did, because she had other people requesting our date, and she had a lot of June and July already spoken for. (We booked in March 2013 for a June 2014 wedding).

I booked mines a couple of months ago. Good timing because on her recent Facebook post, she said that all July 2014 weekend weddings is full. I wanted to get as many choices I can get while its early.

@isabelle_86: You can book as far ahead as you want and let them know what you want. Booking further ahead gives you the most options, so if you have the time to do it now, go for it!
Some photographers who have a package including engagement photos might be happy to forgo engagement photos and add on an hour before the ceremony starts for getting ready pictures or something like that!

I booked mine 25 months in advance, but I’m a weirdo and I need to have things lined up like yesterday.

I booked ours 15 months in advance. We live in Iowa. I think it depends on the quality and popularity if your photographer and if you’re getting married in peak season (which you are).
For what it’s worth, our photographer just posted on her blog that she only has a few slots open in 2014 and is booked for 33% of her weekends in 2015.

We just booked ours last week which is a actually 16 months in advance of our wedding date! We are doing engagement photos this fall, however. I would say book as soon as you are able to put down a deposit.
