A card like a birthday card (folded in half) or a card like a piece of an invitation (flat)?

For a Folded card, start a new word/office/openoffice document. Set the paper 8.5×11 to portrait, no right or left margins, .5 inch top margin and a 4 inch bottom margin. Make it two columns- no line down the center. Outline the outter 4 “walls” of the text box. Fill with things!

For flat cards, start a new document. two choices: use 8.5×11 paper OR 8.5×14. If you have 8.5×11, just do the same thing as above, but use a line between the columns. However, if you go get the legal paper, follow these things: set the paper to landscape, you need to either set both right and left margins to 0.625 OR one margin to .5 and one to .75 (either way, you need your margins to equal 1.25 together). Set the upper margin to 1 inch and the bottom margin to 1.25 (or any combination which equals 2.25″). Set 3 columns with lines between and outline the outter “walls” of the text box! Fill with things!

If you use Microsoft Word you can go to File, Page set up, then paper size and choose the right size. It will automatically set all the margins and everything for you.
