I have already started because Wedding Wire sent me an email saying that I would get a free gift with a new registry at Crate & Barrel (liars), but I probably would have waited until a few months before invitations were sent out, otherwise. I’ll probably have to do some updating since many items may be discontinued a year from now. :/

I got yelled at by everybody for not doing it when I was “supposed” to, so according to what people say, if you are getting married late June, do it by late March early April.

@Miller:  Well we started back in July, our wedding is in Oct. And I think it was the perfect time. We went a couple times, each time only spending about an hour in the store. And let me tell you, an hour isnt a lot.

I started because my family asked me to since they wanted to get us engagement gifts. Nothing too big on there though.

If you create one too early things will go out of stock/numbers change. We made ours in June (for October wedding) and a few items have already been discontinued.

We did one already … which, to me, was super early. However, family and friends were asking  our moms, and we had already gotten a few engagement gifts that weren’t our style …. I just need to keep up on having it stay current.

We did ours a few months before the wedding, I think.  Maybe over Christmas and the wedding was in May, but I just wanted it out of the way.

You can start picking stuff out anytime, and some places let you pick if anyone can search for it or not.  We only did Bed, Bath, & Beyond and you can make it private.  We spent some time looking at china and glasses and everything and then finally made it searchable.

When you really “need” it is before your shower(s) – and make sure anything you want early is on there.  I was really hoping to get our serving set and toasting flutes early.  🙂

@Bostongrl25:  This.

Be careful about registering too early.  Stock changes, especially between seasons.

I think about six months is pretty average.  You can do research early though, find out which registries around you have the best events and freebies.  🙂

Someone told me to register before out engagement party (Which seemed excessive, because it was a year before our wedding).  I would say to do it about 4-6 months before your wedding.  Definitely do it before you have any showers!

When is your shower? We’ve done a little bit of registering but need to get it done in the next week or two becuase my shower is in October and invited are going out next week!

I noticed today 2 people have bought off my registry (I didn’t even know that it was public yet!)

Our wedding is in March…

Would you like some of the things for Christmas?  If so, I’d do a bit of it early Dec, but be warned that many things will be discontinued.

Don’t do it too soon! We did ours about 6 or so months out and ended up having to completely redo them a couple of weeks ago (a month before the wedding) because everything was discontinued or they only sold them online now or pieces were discontinued of sets… It was crazy!

i was wondering about this too because i really want to register (it looks like fun!)… all the “official” wedding sources say as soona s you get engaged, but anecdotally, it seems like 4-6 months makes the most sense!

@pigzfly:  do people usually give registry gifts for christmas? i never thought about that as an option!

Yep! As others have said, stock changes. We did ours far too early for our October wedding (in May of this year). I had to spend so much time cleaning it up and figuring out new alternatives to items that went out of stock. If I had it to do over, I would have put one up a month before the date of my shower and not a day sooner.
