Ask the local liquor store for suggestions. From what I have been told, nearly all wine is supposed to improve with age regardless of price.

I don’t know what it does over time but Fiance and I have tried many many Mascato’s because it is pretty much the only kind we drink and time and time again I find us going back to the Barefoot Mascato…and it s super cheap..like 6.99.  We love the price and the taste

btw what are you putting the wine and letters in? I love this idea and have seen it in a wooden box but don’t know where they got it

@Ember78:  FYI – wine can only age to a certain point, it’s not an infinite increase, eventually it stops improving and reaches its peak… after which it’s not really great anymore?

OP, if you’ve got a Total Wine near you, I totally recommend them.  they’re great at giving recommendations.

@Kaylabrooke:  A small winery could tell you which one of their wines would be best for the two of you based on your likes and tastes.  It really depends on the particular vintage, I can’t just tell you “merlot” and have you run out and buy any merlot you see– like you said, cheaper grocery store wines aren’t really made to keep like that.

A year is very short in wine time.  Generally, reds last longer than whites because they have more tannins– but we’re talking 10 years vs. 5 years (or even 30 years vs. 10 years).  Generally, grocery-store wine bottles are made to drink after purchase so I wouldn’t keep one of those for your anniversary.

If you just run out to a winery gift shop, tell the salesperson you’re buying a bottle of wine to drink on your anniversary next year.  My guess is that they’ll let you take home any bottle in the store.
