I think that depends on whether your date is flexible.  If the venue can only hold one wedding per day and your date is set you should probably book it asap or you might lose the venue.  If you have some flexibility you could wait a bit.

We didnt have a specific date in mind but we still booked about 11 months before.

I booked mine in early Jan. for a mid May wedding and we BARELY got the date. We’re in a populated area though.

14 months out for us and May dates were already beginning to get snapped up at many of the venues we toured. I say if you know, why wait?

We booked the venue in May 2011 (but began looking into it in early April) and we are getting married Sept 2012…so, 16 months in advance. At the time we booked, the September dates were getting booked up…with one couple already booked and another looking into our date.

I think if you’re flexible on the date, you should just wait until he gets back and see it together and then see what dates they have available.

It also depends on your venue and how fast they book. My venue books ricidulously far in advance (We went in Feb and tried to book a 2013 May or June date, and by the time we were ready to book, we already lost our first and second choice dates in June!) I would say while your husband is away, call the venue and ask them how far in advance they usually book – they should be able to give you a good idea.
