who is paying for this? if your fmil isn’t, then she has no say in the venue!

=( well I would tell her that she is free to shop around, and if she has something serious (price quote, sample contract, etc) then she can tell you

@wederly:  ugh then yeah it definitely makes the situation tougher since she’s paying for it. My mom is the same way – she sees it as “her” wedding she is throwing for us.  It’s annoying! But, there would be no wedding if my parents weren’t paying for it, so I guess I can’t complain too much!

Perhaps give her a timeline and commitment – say I will be happy to come up on 1 day only to see X number of venues, and that a decision will have to be made that day. Also, to ease your nerves, let her know that in order to provide guests with a proper of time to plan you will need to have the venue set by X date.

I understand your fustration, but you have a woman who is paying for the reception and if she wants to invite more people (since she is paying) she should be able to. :/

Does your fmil know your taste in things? Will she be able to look at something and say “ooh she might like this” or “no thanks – this won’t be her thing”? If she is able to do that, you could let her scope out a bunch of venues without you and have her take pictures to send you.  Then you would be able to go spend a day and just see the top 2 or 3 choices.

Just let her know you want to have a final decision made by X date. I’m sure she’d be willing to help ensure a venue was picked before then.

ETA: I love your colour choices – it looks beautiful!
