I found out last week I was preggo, not sure how far along yet, my ultrasound is scheduled for next week. Our guess is I’m about 5 weeks along. I’ve had horrible cramping for the last 2 weeks but not bleeding. Dr says it’s normal though. Last week I weighed myself I know I gained at least 2 pounds from my normal weight. I then weighed myself today, less than a week later and I’ve gained another 3 pounds! So 5 pounds at 5 weeks in matter of barely a week! Does that seem normal? Does that mean I’m going to be huge? I’m not eating any more than I normally do, if anything I’ve actually cut out a lot of sweets since I don’t seem to have a taste for that right now. I do feel really bloated and uncomfortable and my pants are tight.
Anyone else go through thsi so soon?

I’ve heard that you can get really bloated and constipated in the beginning, but that after a few weeks, it will go back down again before the *real* pregnancy weight gain starts. Are you drinking lots of water? And maybe up your fiber a little!

Pretty quickly I went up to my bloated period weight. I don’t think any of it was fat gain at that point but a lot of bloating was going on, which I think is pretty normal.
Personally I don’t think you can tell much from pregnancy weight gain – it just does what it’s going to do (unless you start really changing your eating habits and start gaining a lot of excess). But for me I went to my bloating weight then gained 5 lbs on top of that over first trimester. In my second trimester I gained 5 lbs a month for the first two months and then all of a sudden I stopped putting on weight. Didn’t put on a single lb for 2.5 months (so the end of my second/beginning of my third trimester). I got kinda nervous but my belly was still growing fine. Then I started gaining about a lb a week. Now my weight is kinda tapering off so I’ll gain about 20-25 lbs on top of bloating weight, which is on the lower end of what they recommended, but it was a bit nerve raking those first few months watching the lbs pile on and wondering if it was going to stop.

Thank you!!! I am trying to increase my water intake, I always forget to drink water durning the day. I actually was really regular last week, going like crazy, and now this week I do feel a bit stiff so I think I need to up it a lil. I hope the bloating goes away!

Water is the best thing to help deal with bloat! I try for at least 2 liters of water during the day plus other drinks in the morning/evening.

My doctor told me that a lot of initial quick weight gain is your body creating extra fluid for the baby, not “real” weight gain. So I wouldn’t worry about it!

I gained 4 lbs in my first few weeks also. Like others said, it’s probably bloat/water weight. I’m just about 24 weeks now and am pretty comparable in size to the other pregnant ladies i know that are as far along. I wouldn’t worry too much about it 🙂

I was the same way i gained like 5 pounds between my first visit and my second. First visit 6 weeks, 2nd visit 11 weeks. I asked my doctor becuase i too thought oh geez i am going to be giant. But I wasnt a good water drinker before and i immedaitely began drinkning the 8 glasses + per day. Also your blood suply increases significantly within the first tri. My weight gain has slowed now that i am out of the first tri. Constipation was also an issue about week 8 or so for me, my doc suggested metamucil which really helped me get regular. Also i eat those kellogg brand fiber bars and that helps as well.

@ams12: yep! I’m up 5lbs. from my normal weight and am closer to my bloated/period weight. It was tough to take at the doctors, though! But they did tell me what everyone here is saying…. body is producing more blood, retaining more fluids, etc. I’m also not on my usual black coffee & salads diet, I’m eating real well-rounded meals at least 3 times a day, hehe
I’m continuing to go to the gym and just eat healthier so hopefully that works out for me and the little one! 🙂
