I am trying to get myself into an excercise routine and want to incorperate strength training into my workout. Is it bad to lift weights (5-10 pounds) first thing in the morning? On certain days I work til 930 at night and would love to be able to fit this in first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Anyone know if this is bad for you?

To lift in the morning? Of course not. You should eat at least a little bit – a granola bar, yogurt – before working out.

Go for it! I’m at the gym at 5:45AM lifting heavy weights 3x a week! I would actually eat something beforehand. I usually just eat a banana or nutri-grain bar…just to get something in my stomach. And warms-up/stretching are a must so you don’t hurt yourself.

Definitely try to nibble on a little something (banana, peanut butter on toast, yogurt, something!) and absolutely eat something with a good amount of protein after your workout.
Also, if you’re trying to tone up, you might want to up the weights a bit as well. I don’t mean squat the whole weight rack, but use a good 30-40 pounds for chest & back, and for squats/lunges/dead lifts try using 40-50 (unless you’re completely and totally inexperienced, in which case ask a trainer or fitness guru to help you with your form so you don’t get injured!)
