I’m getting married next July and would like to lose a bunch of weight. However, everyone keeps telling me to get a dress 6 mths in advance. How can I get a dress that fits and lose some weight at the same time? Has anyone successful navigated a 40+ weight loss while picking out a wedding dress?

Following because I have lost 30lbs since I bought my dress and still have 4 months to go. My dress hasn’t come in yet so I’m worried about the same thing.
Also I just want to add that if you’re planning to order a dress from a bridal store and not buying off the rack, 6 months might be pushing it. I was engaged over a year before getting my dress for this same reason. I was worried about buying a dress when I wanted to lose weight. I bought my dress 8 months out and it won’t come in until a few weeks before my wedding.
Don’t wait too long. There’s always alterations. That’s what everyone told me when I was in your spot.

Perhaps try to find a dress with lace-up backing…those are usually pretty versatile. It’s always easier to take something in than to add more room, so you should be fine to buy a dress now and alter it later if needed.

wileyak : Not to be a buzzkill, but you never know how weight loss will go. Buy what fits you now, and it can be altered if you loose weight! Dresses should be ordered 8-12 months out, unless you are buying a sample or off the rack.

If you’re buying off the rack buy what fits you now, just make sure it can be altered or has a lace up back. You realistically have to maintain your weight from three months out for alterations etc. So you have 4 months, it’s not healthy to lose 40lbs over that time period. I would struggle and would be setting myself up for failure. Maybe try to focus on a gradual change. 20lbs is definitely doable in that time frame. That’s just 5lbs a month.
Please be healthy in your weight loss goals and journey.
