After three stagnant weeks, I finally had a good week. I’m down 3 more pounds for a grand total of 18 pounds lost in 6-7 weeks.

I gained .4 8-( But I knew it was coming. Last week was one of my coworkers last week and there were 2 ‘goodbye lunches’ AND my fi’s grandfather died so not only was I unable to exercise half the week (we went straight from work to his grandmothers house) but I was put in front of TONS of delicious food (and nothing healthy). I guess I could have planned better, but I was a little too depressed to be planning meals to bring to grandma’s house! I actually feel lucky I ONLY gained .4 given the week I had. But I’m determined to have a killer weigh in next Saturday! And I still have to remind myself I’m down over 5% of my total body weight in 3 weeks (including this weeks gain).

I weighed in today and I was down 3 pounds!  Yay!  I’ve been losing little bits up until now, so it’s really great to see a big loss.

How expensive is it to join Weight Watchers?  Fiance and i joined a gym but my weight loss is stagnant and although I’m gaining muscle the weight loss would be a nice added bonus.

@Miss Tattoo: Well, fingers crossed no one else quits (we’ve already lost half my group) and no one else dies and I know I’ll be fine!

How exactly does it work? Just measuring and point counting rather than calorie counting?  I’ve been working on keeping a food diary but it just makes me feel guilty when I write down what I eat rather than making me eat less.

I lost 1.6, which was nice. Still truckin’ though.

@Ireland: Yes, WW is basically a system that combines all the elements that contribute to successful weight loss into a tidy package:

1. Accountability. You have to keep track of what you eat, the points system is a variation on calorie-counting albeit a bit more attentive to the quality of food that you’re eating than basic calorie counting would be (one could, for example, eat 1200 calories a day in Snickers bars and still lose weight, but you can’t do that on WW) and weigh-in once per week. You’ll also get all kinds of materials for tracking–graphs, a booklet, etc.

2. Flexibility. It teaches you how to balance out what you eat so that you can fit “comfort foods” and special occasions into your healthy diet.

3. Support. In particular if you go to meetings, although the message boards online do provide support. But in a lot of cases, people who are successful losing weight have some kind of support network. Even the stickers they hand out at meetings are motivating for a lot of people.

4. Exercise. WW is an eating program, not an exercise program, but the program works to encourage you to exercise.

So you could do all these things by yourself–count calories, get a workout buddy, weigh in, do your own journal etc. etc. which is fine. But for me, I couldn’t do all that by myself and needed the structure and convenience of WW. But more importantly, I think, WW gave me the sense that I wasn’t doing it alone–that there was a community out there of people who go through what I go through and who applaud my successes and help pick me up when I have a setback. The bare fact that someone is there to witness your effort is SO important for me in this process.

Don’t get me wrong–WW isn’t for everyone and it is an extra expense, so don’t feel like you HAVE to do it in order to lose weight. And whatever you do, don’t try and do the program on your own because that’s a good way to hurt yourself when you don’t know the ins and outs (I know so many people who have arbitrarily decided they get like, 15 points a day, which would be horribly unhealthy and isn’t allowed by WW). But as you can see, a lot of us are on the program and love it. And it works. So it might be worth giving it a try. Sometimes you can show up at your local meeting center, tell them you just want to see what it’s like and they’ll allow you to sit in for free, FYI.
