I used to work as an assistant to a podiatrist.

Some type of trauma most likely happend, causing a blood blister underneath the nail bed.

Your toenail may fall off…is it loose or just sore? It is also only one one of your nails, correct?

An infection would usually have an odor or white color , causing your nail bed to crumble a bit.

I often have sore big toes when my toenails are too long.  Is it possible you have ingrown toenails on your big toes?  I think that’s what my problem is…

I would also say that it couldn’t hurt to go see a doctor (unless you don’t have good insurance). I recently, for a very similar problem, paid a visit to a podiatrist and it cost $20 – and then $40 for the medicine, UGH! But hopefully you’ll have better luck. My sister has a lot of toe problems – and I’d definitely advise at least having it checked out, just in case!

I only get bruising from shoes that put serious pressure on my toenails…like dancing on my toes, tight climbing shoes, or very long distance running.

A bruising infection from your pedi sounds like a long shot.  Do they look or feel infected?

@cherrycoke: when I went to have my toenails done in July for my wedding, they had to take the red polish off first (such a dopey move on my part to wear red for 2 months before a french manicure!). Lo and behold, there was white stained on there – typical. However, fast forward 3 months later..and it was still there, though grown out to the tip.

At closer look, though, I noticed some cracks and FREAKED, thinking it was a toe issue like my sister (we share no genes, but I didn’t know if I somehow caught something!). I went to the podiatrist after a week of agonizing over not wanting to pay a co-pay to be told that it’s polish stain.

However he told me that it was the beginning stage of a fungus, gave me a nail polish bottle of medicine to put on and plans to check in Dec. Most expensive bottle of polish I ever bought, ha, ha! My grandmother thinks that I might have stubbed it on our honeymoon (last two weeks of August) and then having gone in the hottub, possibly gotten a fungus. The podiatrist said it’s relatively common, though?
