Colored sugar will stay on the cupcakes better. Sprinkles and non-pareils tend to roll off when you bite.

It doesn’t really taste/feel sandy because as soon as it hits your mouth it starts melting. If anything its deliciously crunchy! I wouldnt do the rock sugar, just the fine crushed sugar thats been colored.

@ohheavenlyday: Agreed! Sprinkles tend to fall off easier plus colored sugar is so much prettier and wedding appropriate – sprinkles are more birthday party style.

Sugar looks prettier but I LOVE regular rainbow sprinkles. They make me happy.

I chose nonpareils because I like the way they look.  If you have a good pastry chef that gives them to you on a fluffy buttercream or cream cheese icing (something that doesn’t crust over), you won’t have the problem of them rolling off.

Although colored sugar looks better, I would much rather eat the normal rainbow sprinkles than sugar itself. Even though rainbow sprinkles don’t even tast amazing, kind of waxy. What is “non pareils” or whatever?
