My SO was hooking up our new TV and as he was organizing all the cords, he muttered to himself, “What are you doing, John.” So I asked him if that’s how he refers to himself when he’s thinking. Me, I’ll think, “I need to do this, or I have to hurry up” etc, but I never call myself by my name. I told him that its weird that he refers to himself in the third person, but then it got me thinking. What do you do, bees?

I like these kinds of questions 🙂
If I’m thinking in my own head I’ll use the first person ‘I’ like ‘Ugh I’ve got so much to do today!’. I often narrate to people I know in real life in my head too. Lately I’ve been going through a pregnancy craze and I often imagine telling my old best friend how my imaginary birth went (also in the first person) e.g. ‘It wasn’t really as painful as I thought it would be. Nothing like you see on tv’ or something.
If there are other people around me though and I make a mistake I might mutter ‘Oh my god what am I doing?’ (which is probably directed at the other people in the room) or very occasionally ‘oh my god what are you doing _____?’ in which case I use the third person.

Unless I’m having an imaginary conversation in my head in which case i refer to myself in the third person, I just usually just think without actually referring to myself 😛

I don’t think I usually refer to myself as anything. Now you have me wondering :-p
I feel like usually I’m just the implied noun, rather than any noun being explicitly stated. Although I think sometimes I say “I”
ETA: I think I do say “I” since a lot of the time I’ll be like, talking “out loud” in my head the way I would say something to someone else, kinda rehearsing. Wow now I sound crazy 🙂

At the risk of sounding like a weirdo (lol) I actually refer to myself in the third person quite often. Fiance and I actually had a similar conversation a couple years back. I lived alone and didn’t have much life outside of school while I was in college so when Fiance wasn’t around, I spoke to myself or to the dog. I swear I am not crazy, I just learned to enjoy my own company and admit to the occasional (daily) “What are we cooking today, calirorter.” type of convo with myself. I thought everyone did that until Fiance told me he didn’t as did my sisters lol

This thread makes me feel so much better about the fact that I constantly narrate my own life and talk to myself and “rehearse” saying things. I AM NOT ALONE. I sometimes use second person or even 3rd when I’m feeling creative (getting ideas for writing) but never say my own name.

Haha! Well… FI’s family call me LinnyLou or just Lou. If I’m not refering to myself as ‘I’ (which I sincerely hope is most of the time!) I refer to myself as ‘Lou’. god, that’s embarassing

Wow, it’s weird to kind of think about that, lol! Usually I just refer to my self as I, so in first person. But I do have moments like your SO where I’m like, “WTF Courtney, that was dumb, what are you doing?” So I guess it depends on the context/situation.

I think in my head I’ll refer to myself as pretty much anything… My name, “you” “we” or “I” lol.
I’ve been known to refer to myself in third person out loud as well, I blame all the anime I watch :3

Haha, sometimes if I’m talking out loud to myself I’ll call myself ‘self’ or ‘you’ but generally if I am in an internal monologue, I’ll say ‘I’. I never really get into third person.
I’m glad to hear that other people have constant narration and an inner monologue!

Haha this thread cracks me up and makes me feel so much better! I’ve always wondered if/how other people narrate their lives! I tend to alternate between first and third, kind of depending on how serious whatever it is that I’m thinking about is. So if it’s a bit more silly I’ll use third person. Haha, oh dear.

I don’t call myself by my name either.
It’s usually “I” or “me”, rarely “you” (usually a self-criticism), and occasionally “we” (usually a self-negotiation).
I know a girl who speaks about herself in the third person (“X did this”), and not only that, she says she visualizes herself from outside of herself looking back at her, rather than as being inside her head. “I” exist somewhere in the middle of my head, behind my eyes.

I definitely don’t use my own name, but I’ll think things like “It’s ok, you got this”… as though I’m talking to someone else, haha. Mostly before practical exams at school, but I’m always so terrified that anything goes at that point! It doesn’t matter if I look like a crazy person.

I refer to myself in the third person as both my real name and the nickname my fiance calls me. And I do it all the freaking time,
