@moderndaisy: OMG! I have already been informed by FI’s Step-Step-Grandmother (What do you call the step mother of his step mother? Step-Step-Grandma? Double-Step? I need to think on this) that she has the invitation framed as a wedding gift, and that it usually costs her like $70 but that it’s “worth it”. She then told me to keep extra invitations just in case the one they receive gets messed up in the mail, I get get her a good one to frame! SERIOUSLY?!?!

It’s very sweet, don’t get me wrong. But think of all the things we could do with that $70. I can frame my invitation myself!

OMG! I love the egg! It sounds perfect to keep passing around to all of the weddings you go to!

They had a shower for me here at work, and this one girl, who is really sweet, knit me this shrug…and it was hideous. I mean, I know she tried, and it was so sweet of her to do, but two of my friends almost had to leave the room in fear that they were snickering too much. So funny!

I love all of these…please…keep them coming!!!

This thread is hilarious!  So although almost half of our guests didn’t give us anything…not even a card….we did get some pretty interesting items.  (We didn’t register)  The one that still has us cracking up is:

A bronze lil cowboy boot with toothpicks!  Yes ladies, we got toothpicks! It is sitting in my china cabinet as we speak and I can’t help but chuckle everytime I walk past it.  It is definitely the most memorable gift ever!

@Monkeygirl: That is weird. I have knitted wedding presents for peopls- but it is always an afghan, so they can snuggle together. (And I still include a check, too)

@futureMrs.L: Omg that reminds me of a similar item I have in my china cabinet. It wasn’t a wedding present, but a sentimental forced gift of sorts. So after my grandmother passed, my sister and I helped my dad clear out her house. It was a beautiful trip down memory lane, and my sister and I each got to select a few items that we wanted for memory’s sake and to fill in gaps in our own homes. My dad, oh I love my dad, he found this circular stand of little swords (I guess you’d use them as toothpicks or an olive pick sort of thing in a martini?!) that he had bought my grandmother when he was in Europe 40-something years ago. He didn’t want to bring it home (likely because my mother would kill him) but insisted that either my sister or I take it. Since my sister has two really rambunctious boys, mini metal sharp swords are not okay in her house. So now, I have about a dozen 3″ long gold swords on a circular stand that I cannot throw out. Jeez louise. What am I supposed to do with them?! LOL!

@bakerella: I especially like how the poem is written specifically to the woman in the relationship (ie- continual use of “you and him together”), not to both people.

We haven’t had our wedding, yet, so I can’t speak to that.  We did get an engagement gift that was somewhat odd.  (A little background- we have a family friend who hates cats but who has agreed to cat-sit for us on occasion through the years when we go out of town.  As a joke, we’ve given him cat-themed gifts before as joke gifts and he’s done the same.)  This same family friend, upon hearing of our engagement, sent us a set of 4 small (maybe 2 inches tall each?) cat figurines, each playing a different instrument.  With them came a card that said “Playing sweet music together, OH YEAH!!!”.  Uh…. what?

A kitchen clock that was an upturned  saucepan with the clock face on the bottom of the pan.  The pan part was abocado green plastic, circa 1970.  Even worse, it was from DH’s sister, who missed the wedding to go on a fishing trip, and it was likely a regift from their wedding 20 years before.  She did not do it as a joke.  It was for real.  And it was her actual gift.

Wow…that’s a really forward gift!!

We got some kind of metal/bronze-ish flower mini sculpture thing, lol I have no idea where they got the notion that we’d like it.

I just got my aunt’s gift: a poster and two pot holders.  Oh and a “Turkish Vanilla Taffy” candy bar with a post-it on it that says “ask your mom.”  I’m not sure I want to tell my mom about this bizarre collection of gifts… she might not be too happy!

Oh and my friends had someone give them a card containing one yen, “for their honeymoon.”  They were going to Hawaii.

@Bakerella…that is too funny!  Heck, maybe our lil mementos will come in handy sometime in the future…like if I ever run out of floss one day and if you are ever challenged to a sword fight!  LOL….
