It depends on where you’re hosting it and if your venue has any requirements.  If it’s open to whatever you choose, preordering/buying the wine by the case is usually much cheaper, but it also adds one more thing for you to worry about.  If you’re traveling, it’s best to pick and choose what you want to put your effort into or you’ll go crazy!  Depending on the time that you’re hosting the get together, you can possibly provide canapes (passed or plated buffet style).  I planned my welcome cocktail party to last 2-3 hours, which was just about right.

I provided welcome drinks for my guests. They had to hang around for about 20-30 minutes before the ceremony. We ordered 1 round (virgin mojitos + lemongrass and ginger juices) in advance and guests could order drinks from the menu after that (but no one did, maybe they didn’t know. In any event, no complaints).

The drinks were about $10 each.

thats a good question, I was wondering that myself, I am trying to decide between welcome drinks & nibbles or welcome lunch.  If I had welcome drinks I was thinking 2 hours.  I was also thinking we could have it in our villa as we are renting a 3 bedroom villa before the wedding, so that would be cheaper both for drinks & food as we could buy our own.

@jmmacdon: whereabouts in greece?  we visited in 2010 and loved it so much.  One thing I remember is sometimes you can use the pool at different resorts without even staying there as long as you buy drinks etc so maybe (if you arent already set on your beach bar) you could find a resort and enquire, they could maybe organise canapes and drinks and your guests could use the pool also?
