Live and let live. If someone isn’t hacking into my bank account to buy a diamond, I simply don’t care.

A pair of Channel sunglasses made of plastic costs $200+ dollars.  Designer heels go for $500-1000.  From video game consoles, to high-end cars, to steakhouse meals, we spend tons of money on ultimately discardable items purely for the enjoyment of it.  The diamond ring is no different.  What guy on earth ever said “this engagement ring will be an awesome investment!”  You don’t ever intend to sell it…

Also my diamond engagement ring was FI’s grandmother’s, so his grandfather made a pretty awesome family investment by saving his grandson a few grand 🙂  I hope my future grandson will give it to his fiance someday.  Unlike plastic sunglasses these things tend to last.

While I love diamonds, not for value or because they’re “rare” (notice quotation marks) but because they’re a natural rock from the earth, sparkly and white. I would love it if they were on the same price point of natural untreated sapphires though, which are actually more rare than diamonds.

For 20k, I could have a 4-5 carat sapphire, that gorgeous and much more rare than a diamond. For 20k in diamonds, I could get 2-2.5 carats depending on the stats. Oh how I wish a 4-5 carat diamond was 20k! Laughing

We just did this. I vote for a site wide ban on this discussion.
