I work very closely with a team at work and they asked if I wanted to join them for lunch today. I asked where they were going and they mentioned the name of this Indian buffet. I cannot handle spicy food, and the few times I’ve tried Indian food, I didn’t care for it. The spices, even when not particularly “spicy” do not agree with me at all.
The guy who asked me gave a response of, “well, you obviously don’t like Indian people then.” And he wasn’t joking. Two of the folks on the team are east Indian in descent, and the rest are caucasian. I didn’t realize I would be considered a racist for not liking a certain kind of food. I hate pasta too, so I suppose I don’t like Italian folks either.
Definitely a little awkward now!

@MrsPanda99: I’m feeling a little sassy today. I would have said, “No, I just don’t like YOU.” Then walked away 🙂

Wow, that’s quite an assumption for him to make, and extremely rude! I never understand why some people equate disliking certain foods with being offensive. It reminds me of the thread where the bee said she didn’t like coconut water lol. Some people are just so uptight and sensitive!

I cannot tolerate spicy foods either. I am sorry that you had to deal with childish asses at lunch. It was rude of him.

People’s racist mentalities in 2013 still amaze me on a daily basis. How ignorant.

Well, I’d probably rather know how much of a jerk he is now than be stuck in the bathroom with the runs and cramps all night. Some people can be so ridiculous.

@MrsPanda99: Wow, whoever said that was way out of line. I don’t like Indian food either… it makes my tummy really bad, and I can’t stand spicy food in general. My family loves it, though, so I was forced to eat it a lot when I was growing up (my mom would cook it a lot).
There are a couple of dishes I will eat if I have to… like tandoori chicken isn’t usually too spicy… but that’s about it.

Wow, rude. I love Indian food (but I also like spicy food), but not everyone does. Doesn’t make them racist. I don’t like guacamole, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like [email protected] Lord.

OMG that is so rude of that guy. I also can’t handle Indian food. It gives me horrible indigestion.

@s2bmrscook: LOL, I wish I had of thought of that! I was too stunned to say anything, plus I never know what I can get away with saying at work…so I err on the side of caution 😛

Uhhhhhhh wow. If I were in your position, I would have been too stunned to say anything.

What a prick! I would have rolled my eyes and walked away.
