- Wedding: July 2015
So my fiance and I got engaged almost 4 months ago (wow it doesn’t seem like that long), and I’ve been snooping on WB for a while now, but decided it’s time to post our story!
So I’m 23 and we’ve been together for 6 years – I was 17, he was 19. We’re from Scotland but after I graduated from uni last June we decided to save to come on a working holiday to Australia, which is where we’ve been since March. So apparently ever since we decided to come to Australia for a year he knew that’s where he would propose – I had NO idea!
So we arrived in Sydney in March, managed to find ourselves jobs, a place to live…and my wonderful fiance also managed to break his leg! His sister (also my best friend and never one to turn down a holiday) decided she too would come over for a working holiday and was scheduled to arrive on 4th July. Some other friends of ours had been travelling Asia and NZ and had been living in Melbourne since late April. We decided that we would all take a trip down to Melbs, so I started planning like the mild-control freak that I am!
We flew from Sydney to Melbourne on 5th July, arriving late that night. The following day was spent being tourists and seeing the sights. We went back to our friends’ place that they were house sitting to feed and walk the dog and put some ‘nice’ clothes on. After a lovely meal in China Town we headed to the Eureka Tower, that big one with the yellow at the top.
So the 5 of us found ourselves 88 floors up and waiting to go on ‘the Edge’, basically a glass box which comes out from the side of the building so there’s 4cm of glass between you and a lot of nothing. I should have realised something was up when I suggested the Edge when planning the trip and it was being dismissed for being too expensive, but I just was excited as I love this type of thing!
Finally our name was called and it was our turn in ‘the glass case of emotion’ as we’ve now renamed it.
The suspense gets built up as you are initially in darkness while the box comes out from the side of the building, before a switch is pressed and the frosted glass becomes clear. The view, as you’ll see below, is absolutely spectacular.
So we’re all looking around, mostly at the massive drop below. I stand next to my wonderful other half, open my mouth to say something (I don’t even remember what it was now!), our friends step back to the far wall and he says: “actually, there’s something I wanted to ask you…” For a split second I said in my head “oh my goodness, he’s going to ask me to marry him. Wait, don’t be ridiculous, no he’s not”, before he got down on one knee, said some wonderful words and asked me to marry him! I was absolutely in utter shock, so much that I started shaking so badly, and continued to shake for about 30 minutes, before saying yes! And he put the ring on my finger!
We don’t have any immediate plans for the wedding, other than we’ll be getting married in Scotland. But we’re having so much fun down under that we plan to go to New Zealand next year, which has taken priority over a wedding. We’re just enjoying being together and having a great time on our adventure!
So here are some pictures from ‘the Edge’, the professional ones were given to us by the kind staff at the Eureka Towner, sorry if they’re really big!
And my beautiful ring..
So I suspect you’ll be hearing a lot more from me in the future, although we’re off on our next adventure to our next state later this week! I’m glad I could share my story with you 🙂
