- Wedding: June 2014 - San Francisco, CA
Our original plan had been to take Christmas/New Year’s by ourselves and go on our honeymoon … we looked into the prices and it’s soooo much cheaper if we go November 1-9. So we booked it 😀 Darling Husband has a lot more time flexibility in his job than I do, as long as he gets things done, and my boss is super sympathetic to my whole runaway-wedding-thing so she said it shouldn’t be a problem at all as long as I delegate anything that needs turned in that week. I’m a planner and always ahead anyway, so it’ll be fine. We’re so excited!!
Darling Husband and I have both traveled a lot, but we intentionally picked someplace neither of us had been. Any thoughts, Bees? Who took a honeymoon to Fiji? What did you do there (besides the obvious honeymoon stuff 😉 )? How did you get a less touristy/more local experience?

rachel85: I highly recommend not staying on the main island. We went to Taveuni (also part of Fiji, but you’ll need to take a domestic flight) a few years back and if I could I’d be back in a heart beat. We stayed at http://www.fijibeachfrontatmakaira.com and it was truly one of the best experiences ever! If we hadn’t moved further away from Fiji it would have been my first choice for my honeymoon. Taveuni is beautiful, not very touristy at all and staying at Makaira is a dream with the friendliest people you can wish for.
Another group of Islands that are part of Fiji which you could look into are the Yasawas. I haven’t been there personally, but I remember reading good things about it. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/fiji/travel-tips-and-articles/77671
Have fun planning your trip! 🙂

rachel85: We went to Fiji in 2011. Most people I’ve talked to stay on the main island, but we traveled to the yasawa islands. They were really beautiful. Our photos look so much nicer than others who just stayed on the main island and the beaches on the yasawas seemed a lot nicer, so I’d definitely recommend leaving the main island if you can. We did lots of snorkeling, went on a village visit and to some little markets. The people were really beautiful 🙂

We went to Malolo Lai Lai and stayed at Musket Cove Resort and it was like desktop background breathtaking. Such an amazing place I did not want to leave. Definitely venture off the main island and you can’t go wrong. We took a catamaran trip around all the little islands and did snorkeling and kayaked out to a little sandbar in the middle of the water. The sunsets are mind blowing too. The people are sooo friendly! BULA!!
