Nope, didn’t love my house when we first saw it, and it’s still not the perfect house, but it was (and still is) the right choice. We weren’t buying our forever home, we were buying our starter house; something to get us out of renting, provide stability, and help us start our lives together. We needed a certain geographical area, didn’t want a large yard, didn’t want a fixer-upper, and were on a budget. Our house fit the bill. Do I wish we had more space? Yes. Could we have afforded more space? No. The good news is that our house as appreciated in value, and between it and our growing savings, someday we’ll be able to have the luxury of picking out a house we love. Until then, we’re very happy in our home, and feel incredibly lucky to have found it when we did. I know it seems crazy to spend that much on something you don’t 100% love, but this has to be a logical decision as well as an emotional one.

I really like my house, but I wouldn’t say I’m in love with it. It fits the bill for what we need in life right now, is fairly new with few issues. In order for me to decide whether to buy a house, I had a list of non-negotiables.

Mine were:

  • 1 story
  • 3 bedrooms
  • 2 full bathrooms
  • Fireplace (we looked at some without, but even if the house was really nice, I just couldn’t picture myself there)
  • At least 1500 sq. ft.
  • A decent sized yard (this was my husbands non-negotiable)
  • Nice neighborhood
  • Nothing that required too much work (cosmetic stuff like paint, floors wouldn’t be an issue, but we didn’t have it in the budget to completely redo a house)

When we saw our current house, it really wasn’t what I envisioned in my head, but it did tick off all of my non-negotiables. That’s how I decided it was right for us. I do “love” it now that it has been decorated and more our own.
