I was 30 when I purchased my first home.  I had saved enough money to put 20% down and was/and am able to to live roomate free.

24, and Darling Husband was 25.  I don’t think you need to worry though!  I think 22 is young to buy a house, heck I felt young buying one at 24.  Don’t rush into buying a house, make sure your finances are taken care of beforehand.  House ownership comes with tons of expenses and if you don’t have savings to take care of them, it is a lot smarter than to rent until you’ve saved up enough.  Don’t let anyone pressure you, unless they’re also handing you money to take care of the financial side.  (Kind of like weddings – no pay, no say!)

I was 36, Dh was 41 and it was both our first home. We lived in London England for over 10 years though and it’s so expensive there that we didn’t see the point on buying something until we moved back to Canada. I second previous posters though. No need to rush into it, it comes with a lot of work and expenses. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to own your own house but make sure you have the finances in place first.

We just bought our first home. I’m 27 and Darling Husband is 32.

IMO, 22 is very young to buy a home, at my age most of my peers still don’t own a home. I don’t think I know anyone who had one at 22.

futurezakany:  28 and I bought it by myself. I think you’re going to get a wide range of answers due to differences in regional home prices too. I hate watching HGTV and seeing young couples complain that some $100k house doesn’t have granite countertops – oh the horror! That wouldn’t even buy me a condo in Boston lol.

Fiance bought his first at 28, and then when we bought, I was just shy of 29 and he  was 36.

Fiance started investing at 22 but wasn’t ready to invest in property… It would definitely be quite young to buy a house in our area unless parents contributed.

33.  there’s no reason you absolutely must purchase a home right now. I’d be more inclined to work up some good savings first so there’s a really good down payment and a safety net just in case.  Even with a huge down payment on our part, we’re still going to go well over the value of the house because of interest  – the more you can pay off at once, the less you will have to put in overall.

I was just a few days shy of 24, Fiance was 25. Within our group of friends we have some much older than us who are nowhere close to buying a home and some who bought a home at 20. I think it really depends on so much…your goals, you financial situation, where you live. Buying a house is a huge step, and there’s no need to rush into it.
