FutureMrsHodgy:  I agree with you. I’ll make chocolate chip cookies while I’m making Christmas cookies because they’re easy and my family likes them. But yeah, I agree with you.

FutureMrsHodgy:  Christmas cookies are whatever you grew up knowing as Christmas cookies. If your Mom made chocolate chip cookies at Christmas, so be it.

If she made shortbread, gingerbread, Nanaimo bars- that’s ok too.

FutureMrsHodgy:  No, chocolate chip cookies are absolutely NOT a Christmas cookie.

Christmas cookies are cookies that you make exclusively (for the most part) around Christmas-time.

I would not consider chocolate chip cookies “Christmas cookies”.

Nope, I don’t equate chocoloate chip cookies with Christmas.  Sugar cookies, yes.

FutureMrsHodgy:  I don’t see this as something you have to agree on. If he grew up with chocolate chip cookies at Christmas, you are devaluing his family’s choice if you say they are not Christmas cookies. Besides, who ever complained about too many types of cookies?

You could always compromise with Christmas Chocolate morsels-looks like Christmas to me.

I always think of sugar cookies as Christmas ones.

Gingerbread men, shortbrea, sugar cookies, egg nog cookies, those to me are Christmas cookies. Chocolate chip cookies are year round cookies at my house.

I have made excellent chocolate chip shortbread cookies before. That may be a good compromise!

FutureMrsHodgy:  It’s situational. If you’re baking Christmas cookies and include a batch of chocolate chip cookies, then to me, that makes them Christmas cookies.

This is interesting to me. I thought Christmas cookies were cookies made at Christmas time… I didn’t know there was any difference..

So here I am making him cookies that I hate because they’re what he considers Christmas cookies.

True love.

Christmas cookies are whatever you like. There are traditional cookies (sugar/shortbread/gingerbread) but some families also do thumbprint cookies, snickerdoodles, stained glass cookies, etc. It’s all about what every family likes, but I think what constitutes a ‘Christmas’ cookie is something that is not made so often because it is more complicated and intricate. I can do chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies in less than an hour, but sugar cookies take maybe a whole day to make, between the prep and the dough chilling and the cutting and the baking and the decorating.

I’ll probably make chocolate chip cookies around Christmas when I have a family. They’re a favorite of everyone and there’s no reason they have to be ousted and can’t go alongside other cookies that make a more rare appearance.
