How about doing a reading during the ceremony?

We picked our readings and then asked people we wanted involved to do them – in this case, my FCILs and the wife of the friend officiating for us.

@hannahlily:  It would typically be something the bride/groom picked to be read as a part of the ceremony like a Bible verse if it is a religious ceremony or a meaningful poem.

This is the reading my Mother-In-Law will be doing during our ceremony. Not sure where I found it anymore! If you search for ceremony readings there should be a ton of examples to choose from. I thought this one was particularly nice though, and it works for us as a couple. Hope it helps or inspires your friend!

I think a reading is an excellent idea.  And your friend is right, guest book attendant, gift attendant, and program distributor are really not an honor.  🙂

at our wedding we had a “house party”. basically girls that we wished we could have added to our bridal party (though we already had 8 bms!) but couldn’t. the house party girls were like female ushers and would help with the guestbook, passing out corsages, making sure everyone was ok, helping get gifts from guests, welcoming…that kind of thing.  that might be a solution 🙂

Guest is an honour position at a wedding! Personally I feel that creating a (often crappy) job for someone to do so the brides feels better about not including them in the bridal party kind of rude. I would feel like I had been given some sort of consilation prize or that the bride thought I was going to be upset and petty if I wasn’t given a job.
