we are building a beach house and in addition to the house, we would like to add a pool, pool house, outdoor kitchen/bar/living room, guest suite and finish the landscaping. it will be neverending i’m sure.

I lost my job a few months ago, which is making saving money annoyingly difficult. BUT I just figured out my budget, so now I’m moving towards our long term goal of saving money for a house, and the short term goal of just saving up enough to cover any emergency expenses. My savings account was plundered during my first super fun month of unemployment (I pretended it was a holiday), so I’ve got to try and rebuild it!

Life!
Nothing specific now, we just try to put away as much as we can so when we have needs, we can pay for it from savings. In the next year, we anticipate buying new computers for each of us and a printer, and paying for a nice (delayed) honeymoon. DH also really wants to leave his job for about a 6 month break, but I am trying to talk him out of this. In the next 5 years, we anticipate: buying a car, selling the condo and buying a house, having kids. We also believe in maxing out our retirement savings.

Right now we are working towards having enough to open a Roth IRA. Then I think we will start saving toward a downpayment on a house, and possibly our first anniversary trip next May.

Oh man so many big things it’s overwhelming!
Flight home to Australia ($1600)
Rental Deposit ($2000)
House full of furniture (Approx $10k just for the basics)
Car ($15,000)
Wedding (who knows!)
Honeymoon (guessing $5k?)
Deposit on a house ($100k +)
Ugh so so many big things all within a year, I have most under control but thinking the house and honeymoon will have to wait 🙁

Yes, so many things to save for! Over the last few years, I’ve been building savings for upcoming expenses, such as:
- A new(er) car (mine is 20 years old and not likely to last much longer),
- A period of unemployment between graduation and finding a job (since I’m not counting on being lucky enough to line something up to start immediately after graduation – I’m going to try for it, but it took several of my friends 6-9 months after graduation to get a job in our field!)
- Paying off my student loans w/i 6 months of graduation (when they’d start charging interest)
- A downpayment on a house
I think I’m doing pretty well – I’ve got a great start on the first three! Plus, I’ve been working on retirement savings – although it’s painful to see how little my Roth IRA has earned in interest over the last few years.

A new couch and mattress. We’ve been saving for a while, and it looks like we’re going to be able to get them in just a couple more weeks! I’m so excited because we definitely need them. 🙂

House downpayment and furniture. We also have money set aside each month for retirement, but since we don’t see that money it’s easy to forget that we are, in fact, saving for that.
We’re hoping to buy a house by the end of the year. At that point we’ll save more for emergencies since we’ll have more liability.
