We’re getting the in laws to be a wine making kit this year; they’ve expressed interest in it often in the past couple months. So we think they will really enjoy it!

My mom is getting a foot/calf massager because she’s been having a lot of foot pain lately. Frown

Gifts we have done in the past:A scrapbook theme collage photo album. We basically bought a scrapbook album from Michaels then each page was a collage that we put together on the computer. Each page had a theme, like one page would be their granddaughter, another was family trips, one was all the three boys. And we left lots of blank pages for future family memories to come!

Some other ideas can be digital frames, a digital camera, one year we all went in on a external hard drive for them.

Oh! One we did 2 years ago that went over REALLY well. We got a hand drawn pencil sketch of their granddaughter and got it framed for them. They really liked it.

My DaVinci.com. It’s a hit or miss though because we did that for everyone in our family and some came out better than others. I would say the one that came out the best was the one for the inlaws because it was a close up of the granddaughter’s face.

Its my almost IL’s 40th wedding anniversary a couple of weeks before, so we are bringing them into the digital age!

We are chipping in with DF’s sister and her HB and buying them an iPod Classic, a docking station and a turntable thing so they can convert their LPs into music they can listen to anywhere. We might also get them an iTrip so they can listen to their music in the car.

We do not normally go to town like this, but as its from all of us and its their ruby wedding anniversary, we are going a bit OTT!

For FI’s parents, I got his dad/step mom catch phrase because it will give us something to do when we’re there! I got his mom earrings. I didn’t get his step dad anything (I will not be seeing his mom/step dad for Christmas and I’ve never met his step dad). Fiance got them his own gifts (digital picture frame for his dad/step mom, necklace and earrings set for his mom, cigars for his step dad).

Fiance is not buying my parents’ gifts but we’re putting his name on mine. I don’t really think that girls’ parents expect a separate gift from the husband-to-be. My brother and I (and our FIs names will be on the gift too) are getting my parents Wii with Beatles Rockband.

We’re buying all of our gifts together, but it seems like maybe this isn’t the norm? Do I need to buy them a seperate gift? I’m so confused.

I see you’re married, but we just got our engagement pics and we’re going to be giving framed pics to all our parents, grandparents! Maybe you could do that with your wedding pics? I’m also getting my mom a gift card to her favorite store that’s near my house and a train ticket to get there 🙂

We got my parents a digital frame for their anniversary in Nov and they love it, and it’s pretty user friendly.

I also second a scrapbook idea. I made one for my parents’ anniversary last year and I think they enjoyed it.

Maybe custom ornaments? I got one of those for my parents last year. One of those with enough snowmen to count as each one of us in the fam and them customized with all of our names on it.

We got FI’s parents a digital camera ($88 on Black Friday!)  They’re stuck in the dark ages and still use either a 35MM or a disposable digital camera Tongue out

We got my Dad a new drill and my Mom a coat she wanted.

@Ottawabride,
I think it’s different for every couple and dependant on your relationship with the in laws. For us we have been giving gifts as a couple forever.
I would expect though when you’re married you should give gifts as a couple! =)

@hotchild,
There was a super awesome deal on Newegg on Cyber Monday for a really nice digital frame for $70, 10″, 1080 quality with 2GB internal memory, I’m SO kicking myself for not buying it because that’s what we’re looking to get my brothers & SILs.

@Gerbera: Those digital picture frames are great gifts for parents/g-parents!  I personally wouldn’t ever want one, but my grandmother goes nuts over hers.  My mom too!

Not sure what we’re getting the in-laws.  I think I was going to do the mini-pies in a jar thing.  But I really want to get my mom a digital camera so she can use that at my wedding if she wants.  So… I feel like it’s a bit lopsided, if I get my mom a digi camera and my FH’s mom a pie in a jar…. lol.

We are almost done shopping! Yay! We have been giving all out gifts together since we met, so that’s not going to change anytime soon.

For Future Mother-In-Law: i bought a set of 3 photo albums that come in a nice box, 2 real silver picture frames, and 1 large 9 picture photo frame for hanging on the wall. A few weeks ago we went through my FI’s baby pictures. Everything was in a dusty, dirty box full of other crap. I could tell how upset my Future Mother-In-Law was at the state of the pictures. So I am putting everything in frames and albums to protect it and display them. I also got her a charm, for a charm bracelet already she has, which says Mom.

For Future Father-In-Law: I bought him a mushroom growing kit! He looooves mushrooms. He goes morel hunting in spring/summer. He reads books about them. Well, now he can grow his own! I just know he’s going to love this.

For My mom: A dolphin picture frame with a picture of Mr. kitty- our cat that died last week. She has no good photos of him, so I think she’ll appreciate this. I also picked her up a wooden 3-d puzzle of a dolphin and a handblown glass dolphin statue. (Do you notice a theme here? My mom is dolphin crazy and has been for decades!)

For My dad: So far i’ve bought him a framed photo of an old fashioned wooden canoe on a calm lake in fall. He loves th outdoors and boats. I still want to get him a pay-as-you-go cell phone. He only has a home phone and I often worry about him traveling all over creation alone. Also, sometimes there are things we need to get a hold of him about ASAP, but because he’s gone to his cabin (where there is no phone, tv, etc) we can’t. My greatest fear is that something will happen to him while he’s at the cabin and he’ll die because he doesn’t have a phone!

I’m giving Future Mother-In-Law a Vera Bradly purse I got at the spring outlet sale.  I told Fiance he has to get his own gift for her this year, but once we’re married, I’ll probably do all the shopping and we’ll give presents together.

My mother is getting some things she asked for like, perfume and pajamas.  I’ll just put FI’s name on them with mine.

I think I’m going to get my Future Mother-In-Law a gift certificate for a massage.  She works really hard taking care of everyone and she deserves it!  And like VegasBaby, we’re going to have some engagement photos printed and framed and give those as gifts.  I know my FI’s grandparents will definitely like that.

I’m not sure what I’m going to get my Future Father-In-Law.  Last year I gave him a digital frame with tons of family photos from over the years on it and he loved it.

Another idea that we did last year was to create a family cookbook through http://www.tastebook.com.  My Future Mother-In-Law loved it!  It takes some work to collect the recipes, but it’s such a great gift because it comes in a binder that you can add recipes to over the years.

I’m a little worried that I set the bar too high last year because it was the first Christmas I spent with my FI’s family!

We’re definitely giving joint presents this year. We don’t have the money to double up on gifts.

Last year we bought both Mom’s digital frames – they LOVE them. I’ve bought his parents Christmas ornaments, cookie kits, gift certificate for a dinner out for the two of them… stuff like that . His Dad usually gets a gift cert to Brooks Bros or Brookstone something very fatherly like that. LOL

FIL’s are big on gift cards or just asking what you want – they all know what they’re getting for Christmas which is cool I guess because it eliminates  the “do you really like it” anxiety, but I like the surprise better.

My Mom’s a great cook so I usually make her a basket of fun stuff or a basket of candle stuff since she loves candles. You think he’d be the easiest, but my Dad’s always the hardest to buy for.

Ugh, I am stressing out about this! I haven’t had time to do ANY holiday shopping. I feel like I really should give FI’s parents something of my own, even though we are doing joint gifts for my parents. Like Corgi said, I think women are expected to give something on their own, but not vice versa.

I was thinking about giving one of our engagement photos in a really nice frame but Fiance thinks they will already have framed their favorite by then since we’ve given them a copy of the photos… hmm…
