What were your splurges or priorities when it came/ comes to baby gear?
I have been a research fanatic and, while on a strict budget, there are certain things I just cannot budge on or go cheap.
For me, it is the mattress and crib. (I have to have a solid wood crib, I have to an organic mattress.) These are the things I am spending the most on but it definitely in my priority, given that babies spend so much time asleep.
How about you? What were you unwilling to budge too much on?

@cbee: I’m due in June and I plan on splurging on an organic mattress as well. One thing I can’t see myself doing is spending $600 + on a stroller, let alone $1,000 plus. And I live in a city where I mostly walk/take the subway. But I know a smooth ride is really important to some people, and I get that as well! I’m also planning on cloth diapering which I guess will be a splurge in the beginning, but not really, because you save money in the end!

@cbee: That’s our splurge too. We also got an electric bottle sterilizer because we’re using glass bottles and they shouldn’t be microwaved.

Our biggest spurges were Cot, pram, and car seat. Relatives spurged though. 🙂

One of my friends recommended that we splurge on the breast pump because she said you spend SO much time using it…but I’m torn because a handful of my friends have also had trouble breastfeeding and ended up not being able to, so I feel like then it’s a huge waste of money. I see both sides of that one so I don’t know what to do….ugh!

for us it was the baby monitor and cotbed. most defenately didnt spluge on the pram. it was a bargain at under £200 for a travel system.

I tried to save on the stroller for my first, and regretted every single time I used the darn thing, so I plan to buy a good double stroller now since I have a few years of usage in front of me.
I splurged on a good carrier since the cheaper one was killing my back. Best decision ever.
We bought good car seats but waited for sales so it wasn’t a splurge.
The rest was either used, on sale, or gifts.

Baby carrier, sling, car seat, pram (a gift though).

@MissBMarie1428: That is a tough one. Maybe if you get a bp, wait until you really know if you are going to use it before opening it – that way if you change your mind about the pump or decide not to use it for whatever reason, you can still return it. My mum was a stay at home mum with my little sister (13 years ago) and she never pumped. I am *hoping* I can do the same- not have to pump. Either way, I think I will hold off getting one (and hope I don’t need it!) until I know for sure that I do. Even then… I might just go cheap with a hand pump. AH! I originally wanted to splurge on that though.
@bwaychick: I would LOVE a really nice stroller! Nope, just going with an average safe one (the Britax, I think). I definitely chose to splurge on the mattress. Once I learned about all the chemicals in mattresses… I just can’t change my mind! 🙂 The baby will have a much nicer mattress than us!
@Peony007: Oh cool. Yeah, it is really important to me. And getting good quality items hopefully means they can really last a few years. That sterilizer will probably make like easier!
@Kimy: I would just love a stylish Pram! They are so stylish! Relatives splurge… that is the best kind!
@ChocolateLime: We are in a teeny tiny place so we don’t need a monitor right now! (For better or for worse!) That would definitely make life easier though!
@mommytobee: I know what you mean… sometimes saving means spending more because you have to replace things or you hate them or they are crap. I am definitely doing all gently used clothing for the most part (DH and I do too!) but anything the baby spends a lot of time on I want to be quality. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a huge budget? 🙂
@Mrsluckywife: I am also splurging on a bouncer (Stokke) that you can carry the baby around the house in- I think it will really help because we have a two story and I am constantly going up and down. Good baby carrier is a must, right! I guess that is another splurge…

@cbee: Now if someone wanted to Give me a Stokke or Bugaboo I would take it! But my good friend in the city has a one year old, and she said she never uses her more expensive stroller and always uses her uppababy G-luxe ($200) So I plan on baby carrying/borrowing a snap and go until my baby is 3 months old and can use the G-luxe!

i splurged on bottles (comotomo) and on the stroller and car seat (britax b ready) and the babys mattress… it was at the higher end price wise at $180. i figure those are things i am going to use everyday so why not! 🙂

@cbee: Ooh yes – a bouncer is such a good idea 🙂 We got the ‘Miracle’ carrier by Babybjorn – it looks good 🙂

So far…Diaper bag!! Plan to splurge on a crib mattress though.

Were going to spurlge on a new camera, the crib and mattress were given to us they are 2 years old and were hardly used. The stroller and carseat will be a gift from my inlaws, my dad is making us the craddle. I may spurlge on a breast pump, but my friend might give me hers if she is done by the time I need it.
