    I’m an atheist.

And Catholicism is a form of Christianity, so your original poll was correct. 🙂

Catholic and Christian ARE the same thing.  Catholic and Protestant, however, is different.  I think some people think the Christian and Protestant are synonymous and they’re not.  Catholics believe in Christ, which makes them Christians.

I am atheist/agnostic.  I was brought up in a family with no real religion, my mom came from a Catholic family and my dad from a Jewish one.  I have no religious ties, but I do feel more at home with Catholic rituals than Jewish ones because I never took Hebrew.

My Fiance is Catholic, but he believes his relationship with God is a personal one and doesn’t need to go to Church all that often.

I voted Catholic because I am Catholic and it is listed, but I admit to feeling a bit torn between Catholic and Christian, because as a Catholic, I am both (but the poll wouldn’t let me pick both).

Though both of my parents were raised Catholic, they started attending a nondenominational church when I was a kid.  I returned Catholicism as an adult, but because I was exposed to both Catholicism and nondenominational Christianity growing up, I tend to be a very Protestant-leaning Catholic (if that makes any sense). My husband, on the other hand, was born and raised Catholic.  We are raising our children as Catholic as well.

I’m Christian.  I don’t go to church because I’m not too fond of the one in my area, but when I do go I prefer the United Church of Christ.  I listen to podcasts from the UCC church where I grew up.  I guess it’s kind of like progressive Christianity?  The core of my belief is that I should try to live my life like Jesus.

@GreenEyedMoon: I probably shouldn’t be laughing but all the time I spend in the religion department… the arguments Calvinists, Baptists, Catholics and emergent get in can be hilarious!

DH and I are firmly in the Protestant branch of Christianity. Which denomination is a little fuzzier- DH sums it up as “PresBreBapti-Free”

I’m surprised there’s not a higher atheist percentage on here- I’ve read some really strong anti-religion opinions on WB.

Fiance and I are both atheist. I’m also considering joining the Humanist Society because the Humanist philosophy is pretty great.

We’re both atheists and weren’t raised as anything. Neither of us are really fans of any organized religion.

You need to edit your poll. All Catholics are Christian (as Christianity is divided into 2 groups: Catholic and Protestant) but not all Christians are Catholic. Any Christian minister and Catholic priest will tell you the same.

That said, I swing back and forth between Catholic views and Humanist, depending on the day. I was raised by a very strict extremeist Christian family so I’m quite hesitant to call myself a Christian for that reason. But I have still retained many of the ideals that I was taught in (Protestant) pariochal school even if I don’t follow them on a regular basis. But the majority of the time, I don’t associate myself with any religion. The Catholic views are what my mother taught me about years after I left home and those make the most sense to me in terms of Christianity.

@Ember78: I’m curious about your answer because Humanism is a secular philosophy and Catholism is not. Do you believe in a god? Or do you perhaps mean religious humanism (differentiated from Humanism by the lower case)?

I’m an atheist. My parents claim to believe in God but don’t go to church or observe any religious practices, and I was never christened/baptised.

DH was raised Catholic and is now agnostic.

Wow, lots and lots of people raised in a specific religion and chose atheism or agnosticism!

I’m Christian… raised Baptist, although I don’t attend services currently (and haven’t for quite a while).

ETA: I’m not really surprised at the # of atheists or agnostics per se, more surprised at the amount of people who were raised to be a certain type of religious and chose to go against that. Just think it’s interesting that it almost looks like religion is driving people away.

IDK why, but I’m really surprised at the number of atheists here.

I’m Christian and Fiance is agnostic.  I actually consider myself more spiritual than religious.
