I have organised a family get together for may and I want to make a cake because everyone loves cake right? I want to make a two tier cake but I’m not too sure what sizes are appropriate for this amount of people.
Would 6inch and 8inch be OK?

6 inch is too small. 8 or 9 inch would be better. I would suggest a 9 over an 8 though.
Edit: Changed 10 to 9 – If you have a 10 inch pan, that might be better too.
Edit #2: See below – a 6 inch and 8 inch is fine but a 6 inch and 9 inch would look better.

@mrstaylortobe: I think I misunderstood your question. For 20, a 6 and an 8 inch would be plenty. I think that a 6 and 9 looks better though.
Edit to add: I’ve done 6 and 9 inch tiers for my nieces in the past and there was plenty of cake to go around.

Have you ever made a 2 tier cake? It is not very easy.
I agree with @MRSsrm85: – 6 & 9 will look better.
BUT, if you make each layer 3-4 layers, beware that the 9″ layer will feed at least 20 people, more like 24.
Honestly, I would do a 4 layer 9″ cake and leave it at that. My cakes are always about that size, and it usually feeds 20 + people!! It is a lot of cake!!

@mrshunnybunches: I have and Fiance has made a few of them himself. Thanks that is a better way of doing it.
