@mrsjkm:  I said less than 6 months just because at that point it can be difficut (though not impossible) to book the venue, photographer, baker and buy the dress/have it arrive, and give guests that are travelling ample notice. Some places book 8-15 months in advance, dresses can take months to arrive and photographers book early too.

To me a short engagement would be one that might make the process a little difficult because you put more pressure on finding things in time.

FWIW, we are having a 10 month engagement and I almost feel likes it is a little too long for us. An 8 month engagement would have been better, but I really want an August wedding. 🙂

I come from a background where 6 months seems like a ‘normal’ engagement to me. Something shorter than 6 months I guess I’d consider ‘short.’

Anything longer than 9 months I’d consider kind of ‘long.’ My own engagement was 11 months (unforunately there wasn’t a sooner date that would work for us) and it felt like an ETERNITY. Only 34 days left to go now, though!

Short is 3 months or less- get married in the same season of the engagement and that’s a short engagement.

I voted 1 year or less. Around here, a year & a half is about average. (Or somewhere around 14 months)

I got engaged in December last year and I’m getting married in May…so thats about 6 months. I think that’s sorta average. Anything less than that might be short. But I have had people tell me that they think I’m getting married too soon. But I don’t think so. Its not like I have to wait for anything.

I voted 9 months or less. I think the better part of a year or more is pretty standard.

We planned in 5.5months, and it was VERY high pressure for the first 2 months we were planning (until the officiant, reception, and photographer were booked and my dress was purchased). After that it was fine!
