I don’t like mason jars; there, I said it. I just don’t get them I guess. I do NOT want to drink from the same jam jar all night.
I have also heard more than enough about photobooths to last me a lifetime. Our photographer offered to set one up for us (and play a slide show of the guests’ pics at our reception) for $300 and we said no thanks. I keep hearing about the prices of photobooths on the bee and feel like I should say yes….but we just don’t want one!
@chasesgirl – yeah girl, you are missing out! I had my first martini mashed potato experience at Russo’s on the Bay in Brooklyn, WHERE the couple ALSO has the option to make their entrance as a couple either by a) rising to the dance floor on a moving platform with smoke and lasers or b) busting through a “wall” together. It’s so magical.
I can see why the mashed potatoes bar would be popular with venues. It’s dirt cheap, mashed potatoes are a staple food, and it fills people up because it’s so carby. For couples, its a cheaper option as well, and I guess the visual aspect of so many glasses, so many options is appealing to treat a guest to. I’m personally not a fan of mashed potato bars, but I do get the trend somehow.
I really don’t get the mustache thing, though.
I love mismatched Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, cute cake toppers, and a few personal touches (nothing over the top).
Love: Illusion Necklines, Two piece dresses, reception dresses, drop veils, photobooths, letterpress
Dislike: Mashed Potato bars, pink and purple uplighting, black and white photos with one item in color, TOMS and flip flops.
LOVE: Weddings where the bride and groom are super happy and in love, the guests are having fun, and the food is good.
HATE: People telling other people their ideas for the wedding are dumb, when couples forget what the whole wedding thing is about, and when the bride is so stressed about everything going right that they forget to enjoy the day while it lasts!
@ddavila2001: I agree with everything you said. Well, almost everything, so we’re batting almost 1000. 😉 Except for the mashed potato bar. That’s one of our stations at dinner because mashed potatoes are, quite literally, my favorite food. I had no idea this was a popular trend – it was the only thing I told my caterer I was set on from our first meeting and didn’t realize a bajillion other people were doing it, too, till I joined the Bee!
Strapless dresses: I actually LOVE these Ive always had great shoulders (swimmer) and thought this would definitely be my look with a sweetheart strapless neckline….wrong the dress that did it for me is far from strapless but it does have an illusion neckline (LOVE this trend) and a visible sweetheart neckline under the illusion lace.
Photobooths: love them, they may be trendy but they are so fun as a guest (had one at a few recent weddings I attended) and the photobook for the bride and groom afterwards it so great because half of the guests at your wedding you dont even see! So it was cool to see all the photos and comments mid wedding you would have gotten if you got to talk to everyone! (those comments from a recent bride Im not married yet!)
mason jars: love this but with a caveat: only if you really are one of those down home country couples, I grew up drinking from mason jars from my grandmothers homemade jams and we would give them back for her to reuse every year so it is special to me. not cool when you just think they look “cute” and would be an adoarable accessory on your wedding day.
trends oh gosh what a fun post thanks OP!
Like a lot:
Rustic/Vintage themes–I know they are over done but I love them.
Candy Bar (or any type of Food Related Bar)–I am still debating on whether or not I want a candy bar (I would rather have an ice cream bar) but I love the idea–LOVE.
Colored Shoes–I am not a huge fan of colored dresses but all white (or ivory) can be a bit boring. A pop of color with a sash or shoes is definitely a nice touch!
Not a fan of:
Cupcakes–I don’t know why but I do not like cupcakes in lieu of a wedding cake–maybe it is because I like cake too much!
Strapless dresses–My dress is strapless; however, since I hate my arms, I will need to find the perfect brown cardigan to cover up my bat wings.
Mustache props and/or themes–I don’t get how it has become so popular…I just don’t get it!
Brooch Bouquets–I really don’t like these (I am so sorry). I think I like flowers too much.
Fit and Flare/Mermaid Dresses–I don’t find them flattering (again, I am soo sorry).
Photobooths: I think that they are an awesome keepsake/favor. My Future Sister-In-Law had one at hers 3 years ago and the picture is still on our fridge. We are having one as well.
Candy Bars: My mother is in a disagreeance with me, saying that they are ‘childish’ but I love them. We are doing one for favors as well and we are having all of our favorite candies(mine: gummy bears, caramels, licorice. his:now and laters, reeses)
Colored wedding shoes: Mine are Pink!
Bubbles/confetti sans rice for after ceremony: We are using bubbles because our ceremony site will not allow us to throw rice, I think bubbles look really neat in pictures as well.
Ring shots: In photography, I love how the photographers are taking shots of the rings by themselves(off of the hands).
Name hangers: I love these and feel that they personalize dress shots.
Birdcage veils: Just not my thing. To me they look dated and not very elegant.
Short wedding dresses: I am SO over this trend!
Colored Wedding Dresses: As in Vera Wangs new collection. Yes, I understand that they come in white but I just hate that she is sending black and red dresses down the runway. Seriously, who will wear these. I however; have no problems with chamapaign, platinum, light pink dresses.
Peacock theme: I feel as if it is too overdone.
The over filtered yellow-sky washed out photography. PAINFULLY over done.
The sky isnt that color!! Ever!
And the general – as in the last 10 years or so – trend of girls using their wedding as an excuse to make their childhood fantasies of being a princess a reality. We’re not princesses. Time to accept it. And I don’t think even real princesses act as princessy as some brides I’ve encountered. Go figure.
Nothing else really bothers me, now that I think about it. All the different tastes and regional trends make each wedding a bit different and more interesting.
