Dogmummy:  we’re going to start TTC in a couple months, so for now I’m focusing on:

– getting in killer shape (helps your body bounce back better/faster after birth)

– taking prenatal vitamins (you ideally want to start 2-3 months beforehand)

– trying to cut down on my booze and coffee intake so it’s not a nasty adjustment, lol

For me personally, I started exercising to get in good physical shape, and started taking a prenatal vitamin and a DHA supplement this past winter, as well as cutting down on alcohol and caffeine. We are so excited to start!

I got genetic carrier screening to see if I’m a carrier for any of the more common recessive genetic condiditions and I started taking a prenatal. If I could go back, I would have done my research to find an OB that I like before I got pregnant since my GP, who always did my annuals doesn’t handle pregnancies.

I started taking folic acid 3 months prior and started limiting alcohol, sugar and caffeine. I also took an ovarian cancer test and paid for an STD test and had a general check at the gyno to make sure I was ready to go.

Firemansgirl:  aw yay!  That’s exciting that you guys are starting to try soon too.  Yeah I’d be happy waiting a while more honestly, but I’m turning 33 in July so I’m thinking we need to get on it!

I’ve been taking prenatal vitamins for about a year. I’m trying to make a conscience effort to eat better and exercise daily.

Im going to hijack this thread a little here – sorry.

I too am preparing to ttc and i have been told and read on here that i should be taking prenatals/folic acid etc for 3 months + before trying.

Could anyone recommend any brands of these available in online in australia?

I cant purchase locally as i live in a small town and we dont want the whole town to make assumptions as has happened before. So i need to be able to buy them at say chemist warehouse  online.

We have just started this cycle (although I am sick so we only hit the fertile window once… Boooo) and all I’ve done is take folate for a few months and had my blood tested to see if I’m still vaccinated against chicken pox, rubella and I think one other. The doc said that is all that really needed to be done and actually pregnancy vitamins only need to be taken when pregnant.

Good luck!

Dogmummy:  I’m stopping my BC pills at the end of this pack and then we’ll start trying 2 months after that. I have prenatals to start taking as soon as I’m off BC. I go to pilates once a week, and am going to start walking for 30 minutes every morning. I figure if I make a habit out of walking now, by the time I get pregnant I’ll be used to it and will continue throughout my pregnancy, and will be healthier. I don’t drink alcohol or caffeine, or eat raw fish or deli meat, so luckily I won’t have to quit those things cold turkey when the time comes.
