@Eckle:  Great to see another woman working with plants! I see you’re from MN, where are you going to school (if you don’t mind my asking)? My husband wants to get his masters in either plant path or soils.

B.S. in Deaf Education, B.S. in Elementary Education, sociology minor. Starting my masters in Deaf Education. We’re a pretty rare breed but that means almost all of us get jobs in our field. Hooray!

I use my major all day every day, I’m the itinerant Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for preschool age students in my county. For the longest time I didn’t know my major even existed so I started as a Communication Sciences and Disorders major with plans to be an Audiologist but transferred once I found this option and don’t regret it for a second! 🙂

BSc in biological sciences, it was pretty much a build you own science degree and I had a lot of freedom in picking which courses I had. I LOVED that I didn’t have to take organic chemistry, but then it was a requirement for my vet school so had to take summer classes.  Only think worse than organic chemsitry?  Having to take it in the summer!

I majored in English!

I also have an MFA in creative writing, and I’m currently working on my PhD in English and comparative literature.

I plan to be a college professor in English and/or creative writing, so I will definitely be using all of my degrees. However, I think there are lots of jobs out there for English majors even without Masters/PhDs. I did a few internships in publishing in college, which I found fairly enjoyable. There’s also technical writing, teaching high school, and possibly advertising/copywriting.

Bachelor of Health Science, studied Respiratory Therapy…yes I have a job in this field.

Masters of Health Administration…no job yet that is specific to this degree.

I knew that b/c of what I chose to major in for my undergraduate degree that there was a job available when I graduated.

BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology and 5+ years into my PhD in Immunology.  Considering I am still working on my degree I am still in my field, but before I started I worked at a biotech company briefly, so also in my field.

@Cummins59:  I work at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Even though I work in the Plant Biology department I don’t work with plants at all, I actually work with fungi; I’m becoming something of a fungi expert. I’m not currently in school, but I’m going to apply again this fall. Two years ago I was accepted, but there was no professor who could take me because funding is super tight. I really want to study fungal diseases of crops.

@Eckle:  That’s impressive! Have you looked into SDSU at all? That is where we went. I bet you’ll make some new fungicide someday, or find a good recipe for corn smut!

@maloussii:  BA in psychology, which is a useless degree unless you pursue your Master’s, so I also have my MSW, which absolutely transfered to my current job. An MSW and social work license were a requirement.

@Eckle:  Hey you were right, we do work in the same place! Hey neighbor! I mean, to a degree… I still have to commute for 15 minutes by bus between my two jobs on the same campus, so “same place” is sort of applied loosely here.
