My family isn’t big on the whole wedding thing… we mostly have small, cheap religious ceremonies and receptions.
I’m wondering what’s usual to include.. I’ve read/researched a whole lot of options, but I’m wondering how usual everything is… and what your experience was with everything!

Not married yet but we’re doing the rehearsal and Rehearsal Dinner, ceremony, cocktail hour and reception with full meal and dessert and pictures of it all.
Not sure if we’ll do a day after brunch though.

Include what you want and what you can afford!!!

I agree with JenGirl. Include whatever you’re comfortable with and what you can afford.
But to answer your question, we had all of the above, except for after party and day after brunch. And our rehearsal dinner was super casual.

All of the above except for the present opening party. My DH and I opend gifts like mad right before we left for our honeymoon.
And I agree with the PP that not every wedding needs to include all the events mentioned. Do what works with your budget and desires and don’t stretch your budget too thin. We could afford to have all the typical activities and then some without sacrificing, I would never recommend spreading yourself too thin for the additional things. Focus on the things you really want and make those solid…if you have room in your budget then add things on.

Thanks all! I’d kind of love to include most of that (probably not the present-opening… I’d rather do that with FI!)… but it’s definitely not in the budget. I guess I’ll do what makes sense (duh!) and start with the most important things first. 🙂

All of the above except after party (although I think the rest of the bridal party and some of our friends/family went out– we were just too tired). My thoughts, since you asked.
Rehearsal Dinner- great chance to welcome Out of Town guests and thank bridal party. Doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive. We went to a pub that gave us a free room to party in if we paid for dinner.
First look- loved it. So great to spend more of our wedding day with each other! Plus it gave us a chance for tons of great portraits without a time crunch.
Ceremony- that’s where we got married, so yea… loved it haha
Formal pics- Wasn’t important to me but it was to my mom. We did minimal formal portraits with just immediate familiies.
Cocktail hour- necessary to give us time for formal photos and to get the ceremony site flipped to the dinner site (we did an all-in-one venue)
Dinner with guests- I wanted a dance party and I had to feed them first!
Reception- Awesome. So much fun!
Day after brunch – we opened presents here and just did a casual thing at our house. It was great to extend the celebrating a little bit and see our out of town guests one more time– especialy because we weren’t leaving for our honeymoon for a week.

We had a small guest list-about 25..and everyone went to Florida for the week. So we had lots of after dinners/breakfasts/and after parties. No rehearsal dinner, and no actual rehearsal-our officiant’s flight was cancelled and she actually made it to the ceremony site 5 minutes before we were supposed to start.. EEEK.
I would have loved a brunch, but most guests were obviously hungover tired the next morning.
I had my own cocktail hour before walking out of the beach cottage. You know, alone.

There are no rules that suggest you have to include any or all of those things in your wedding. Pick whichever suits your budget and taste and go with those! Anything beyond a ceremony and reception is a bonus 🙂
We personally did a lot of the things in the poll (except for the day-after brunch and present opening party), but we also had a very flexible budget, so it worked for us.

We had a very casual afternoon wedding.
Rehearsal Dinner – yes, because we had a rehearsal the night before. It was super casual though and DH’s dad just rented a room at a local restaurant for about 15 of us.
First Look pictures – yes, and it was easily one of my favorite parts of the day. 🙂
Ceremony – obviously. 🙂
Formal Pictures – I guess so? We did a lot of them before since we had the first look, but did more after.
Cocktail Hour – no. Wasn’t necessary for our wedding.
Dinner with Guests/At Reception – sort of? We had a buffet of heavy hors d’oeurves and desserts, as well as cake, etc.
Reception – sort of? Not really? Lol. We had one, but it wasn’t a big dance party and no alcohol.
After-Party – no.
Day-After Brunch – no, we left for our mini-moon right after our wedding. Wouldn’t have done it anyway.
Present-Opening Party – hadn’t heard of this until the ‘Bee. Wouldn’t have done it anyway.
