Fiancee and I are 100% certain we want to elope. We are looking at courthouse and elopements. I planned on wearing a wedding dress, albeit simple and without a train or a removable one. When I sent my bff a picture of one from David’s that’s on major sale (limited sizes available argh), she agreed it was gorgeous and just what I’m looking for but that she’s never seen anyone wear a dress to courthouse wedding. She’s had 2 marriage in court, both her sons had a court wedding so she’s claiming she’s seen her share and it would be weird.
I’ve seen photos of court weddings with beuatiful brides in wedding dresses and told her its personal preference but I’m curious now and a little worried about looking over the top. We plan on hiring a photographer and doing pictures right after.
She’s also been wanting me to have a wedding so she can plan since she never got to and offered her backyard but I don’t want to. It would just be a disaster since she’s very last minute type and has failed to follow through on almost everything we plan.
But I digress… Would a wedding dress be over the top?

Wear the dress!!!! Don’t listen to your friend, tons of people wear gorgeous gowns to the courthouse. You’ll look great in the professional photos and it makes the day more special, not just like running another errand!
There’s quite a few bees who’ve done it, hopefully some will come into this thread to share pics.

Agree, wear the dress. Absolutely no one at that courthouse will care and if you’re getting photos as well, it makes sense to not wear jeans and a tshirt like I did, lol. Just because it never happened when your friend was there doesn’t mean no one ever wears a wedding dress.
my parents had a courthouse wedding and while she didn’t wear a “proper” wedding dress, mom did wear a minidress she’d made herself specifcally for the wedding and dad wore a suit (1970s).

You can wear whatever you want to a courthouse wedding, there’s no right or wrong!

I worked in a courthouse during law school and witnessed some weddings. People dressed all kinds of ways: grubby shorts and T-shirts, jeans, Sunday best, traditional wedding dresses.
Wear what you want!

You can wear anything you want. A simple wedding dress without a train sounds perfect. It doesn’t matter what other people do.

hbraerae : This is how I will be getting married as well (very likely) and I plan on wearing a white floor length (or midi length) dress, whether is a bridal gown, prom dress or just a white dress. Do you!!

I am also considering getting a white tulle skirt and finding a nice white crop(ish) top to go with it, maybe lace.

Wear the dress. The day we got our marriage license there was tons of people there for their elopements and had full wedding dresses on and tuxedos. One couple had their photographer taking pictures of their every move (which I thought was over the top). But anyway they definitely do wear wedding dresses and depending on the courthouse a lot of them have cute little set ups which helps for pictures. It’s not like a court room that used for criminal proceedings.

We had two mini-weddings, and the first was sort of an elopement in Denver with a follow-up backyard wedding for immediate family two weeks later. I wore a knee length white dress from Nordstrom with Sketchers, and was perfectly happy.
You can wear anything you want to your courthouse or backyard wedding! Wear whatever makes you feel good.

I’m eloping and plan on wearing a wedding dress but if I had decided to go with the courthouse option I would’ve worn one there too. It’s a once in a lifetime and I wanted to be able to have that experience regardless of the venue. I think you should do you and wear a wedding dress! It’s a special moment between the two of you, why not get all glammed up? 🙂

I’ve seen everything outside of the SF Courthouse! Traditional wedding dresses, destination-style wedding dresses, casual dresses, business attire, jeans and tees, anything goes!

I’m not eloping to a courthouse but it’s still an elopement and we are wearing the full dress and kilt. (Scottish wedding). I have seen a courthouse wedding and they wore white wedding dress too. I say go for it. Xx

I wore a wedding dress to my enlopement wedding. It was David’s Bridal, ivory lace, and full length. I’m really happy I wore it because when else do you get to wear a wedding dress? I went to David’s Bridal thinking I was looking for something shorter and simpler, but felt much more bridal when I tried on the long dress!

Thank you so much everyone! I really wanted some beautiful pictures in a wedding dress and just because we aren’t planning a big wedding doesn’t mean I can’t have my dream pictures!
It really does put my mind at ease knowing I won’t be the weirdo on this lol.
