I purchased my dress a couple of weekends ago at a Brides Against Breast Cancer event and it’s currently hanging up at my parents house. My wedding isn’t until May 2010 and the dress needs to be cleaned and altered a little bit. Should I clean the dress first and then have it altered? Or should I have it altered and then cleaned? And when should I do all of this? I feel slightly confused about the process since unlike a lot of brides, I already have my dress and am not waiting for it to arrive at the dress shop. Is it going to be okay hanging up at home, will it yellow?

First, congrats on getting your dress! Yay!
My suggestion would be to have it cleaned first and buy a dress bag for it. That should help keep it clean once you’ve hada chance to clean it.
I hear that dresses can yellow if they’re exposed to a lot of heat, so keeping it in a dark, cool and dry place is probably best until you get closer to the wedding.
Finally, I know a lot of brides try to get into shape before the wedding which may change their measurements. If this is so, perhaps hold off on getting the alterations until just a few months before the wedding (2-3?). You’ll hav to do a final fitting a week or two before your big day anyhoo. (Though I don’t think it hurts to find a good tailor in the meantime!)
