Why don’t you ask her? Politely say to her “Would you mind if I called you by your first name?”. She’s going to be family and you should be able to approach her. It can’t be any more awkward than saying “hey you” to her when you don’t address her by anything!
@Hunnybear: I was just having this convo with a friend who is married to a Korean. She said once her baby is born, she’ll just be known as “baby’s mom” in Korean from then on. I thought that was strange, but she explained how first names are rarely used. Must be the same with you.
For me, I pretty much call every adult by their first name. I think if you’re young, like under 18, it’s appropriate to call people “Mrs. Whatever.” But at almost 25, I don’t see why I need to call someone else “Mrs. Whatever” just because they are older than me. So I call my Mother-In-Law by her first name, just like everyone else. I would NEVER call her Mom. I have a mom, and I don’t need another!
My Future Mother-In-Law prefers I call her “Mrs. Lastname” until I’m married, and then I can call her mom. I’m not too crazy about calling her mom, so I will probably just call her by her first name after that.
Future Mother-In-Law is nicknamed Millie (MIL lol) around my family, but when we’re around her, I address her as Ms. H. She was never married and her last name and mine will be the same. I have been calling her this for 6+ years and when I try to address her by first name, she doesnt like it.
I usually call her by her first name, but in the last year the running joke has been to call her “LA-DY!” It has kind of stuck so now I tend to call her “La-dy!” My husband calls my mom by a nickname too, but it is kind of cute because my family came up with my husband’s nickname as well.
I call her by her first name. I’m the only “kid-in-law” that doesn’t call her mom, but we’re not close and I wouldn’t feel right calling any one else mom other than my own mom.
