I recently read an email from one of those baby sites, and it said that babies should only spend 5-10 minutes at a time in a Pack and Play.
I don’t do that.
I take her out, I play with her, we go on walks/errands, she spends time on the floor, we read books, she plays in her bouncer, but, on the other hand, if I put her in her pack and play with some toys, she’s totally cool, often for more than an hour, especially if she can see me, folding laundry or whatever.
When I told Darling Husband that emails were saying no more than 5-10 minutes, he was like “Then what do you DO all day?”
So, we’re at a loss. Do you think that email is bogus and I just have a baby who is cool with independent play? Am I doing something wrong?

5-10 minutes?! How are you supposed to be getting anything done? I think if she’s happy and it sounds like you two are getting lots of time out and about doing other things you’re totally fine. If anything, at least now you’re conscious of how much time she’s in there, but really, I think 5-10 minutes is a little absurd! Why even bother? It sounds like you two have great days, I wouldn’t worry about it.

@babybuzz: I know! I read that, and I was like “But my days are so crowded now!” But I have the phrase “benign neglect” floating around in my head, and while I don’t know exactly what that means, that’s also not what I want to be doing, you know?

Um, I’m no child expert but if she’s content to chill out in the Pack n Play for a while, I say let her. 5 – 10 minutes seems kind of ridiculous.

Thats the only way to get anything done and it sounds like you are doing alot of other things with your child as well.
But, to answer you question the days I don’t have school we play and when I need to clean I put him in the exersacuer or walker and talk to him while I do things. Indepdent play is imporant

What is the reasoning behind this 5-10 minute rule?

No that is silly to me! My niece had a large pack and play in the living room and she loved being in it with her toys while mom cooked/folded laundry. I plan to do the same thing with our little one. They need to be independent and we need a break too.
Besides if you only put them in it for 5-10 mins a day then what’s the point of having it at all?

They say that about everything! Swings, chairs, play pens. I think it’s completely ridiculous. If my baby’s happy in his swing I’m not going to be in a hurry to take him out and upset him.
