(Closed) What do you eat pre-workout?

I’m struggling with this, too. I don’t eat when I’m not hungry, so I finish eating lunch around 1:15 and then get home and work out around 5:30 and get hungry like 10 minutes in. I have a hard time getting myself to eat before I leave work, though. :

I go the gym after eork as well and I eat a protein bar before I work out! Luna protein bars are really good for women and they taste yummy! I like the cookie dough ones. Try it out!

I hate working out with a bunch of food in my stomach so I typically just eat a banana or something.

I try to eat something that will give me an energy boost without weighing me down. Piece of fruit, nuts, or protein bar (as PP suggested, I love Luna Bars too – not high in calories like some others).

I don’t normally unless I’m just famished.  But if I need something I’d either go with an apple/banana or maybe part of a piece of bread with peanut butter. I don’t like working out with a lot in my stomach so I try to keep it very small or eat the apple about an hour before I go. 

If you are wanting something during activity I actually love the Clif Shot Bloks if I am going to go run for a long time, cycle for 2+ hours, or do all day hiking.

A banana or I time my meals so I’ll be ok before the workout instead of exercising with a belly full of food.

I usually work out (run) in the evening, so I eat dinner first then go for my run around 8pm.  But if I run earlier, I will come home and eat a hard-boiled egg,  apple slices with peanut butter, or a banana at least an hour or so before my run.  I really like the hard boiled eggs because I can make a bunch and even take them to work sometimes to eat at the end of the day so I can run right after work.

you should eat about an hour before you work out..i usually have an avacado..its a good source of good fat & energy to get you through the work out.

i crossfit 4x a week and this is perfect.  bananas can upset your tummy & they have a lot of sugars as well.

@Stephville:  So this really depends on the workout you’re going to do, and also your stomach. I have the unfortunate luck of a stomach that’s really picky, and a pretty intense workout schedule. 

I can’t eat less than 2-3 hours beforehand, or my stomach just becomes a total mess. I also can’t have bananas (they have lots of potassium, which can cause upset stomachs) and cashews are off limits, as as grain-heavy granola and protein bars. 

For me, the best pre-workout fuel is a greek yogurt and some almonds about 2 hours before. Theres some sugar, carbs, and protein in that. I’ve also made plain greek yogurt mixed with a little bit of peanut butter, and some apples. 

Unless you’re doing an intense workout, you don’t need the pre-workout gummies or drinks. Aim to have a snack around 3 at work, and you shouldn’t be starving beforehand. Play around with the timing, and see what works best, so you aren’t hungry, but you’re not trying to work out with food sloshing around in your stomach.

@Chelwilly:  +1 re: Luna bars FTW.


They are low gyclemic too meaning they take a while to break down and leave you full longer. I always have one between work and evening classes and when my only other option is the horrid fast food at New York Penn Station. 


My fave ones are the chocolate peppermint and vanilla almond.

I get really nauseous if I work out on a full stomach. If I really need something, I tend to go for half a banana, a big spoonful of almond butter, or protein powder mixed with eight ounces of unsweetened vanilla almond milk (sometimes I do half water). I also like to have a glass of water mixed with powdered green supplement from Trader Joes (Super Greens?). If I am starving, I buy a protein bar at the gym.

Usually my PM snack is sufficient to get me through. I’m off at 4 and eat a handful of almonds or a hard boiled egg. I can’t eat much or I feel sick and bloated.
