conejo55:  I think it all depends on your style. I just did a lot of research online of photographers in the general area and looked through their portfolios. When I saw things that fit my style, I reached out. Some questions to ask:

1. How many weddings have you shot?

2.  Budget questions like fees and what it includes, how many edited pictures you will get (make sure you get the rights to the pictures), whether any prints or albums are included, etc.

3. How long you will have the photographer for and whether there will be a second photographer

Style, quality of work, experience in photography are the obvious ones.

We also wanted to find a photographer we enjoyed being around. The photographer(s) will be the people you spend the most time around probably the whole day. We didn’t want to hire someone that takes amazing pictures but is miserable to be around.

3. Copyright

conejo55:  All of the things PPs have said are super important. But the most important thing for me was having someone I felt comfortable with! I didn’t totally consider this before we booked our photographer (he ticked every other box), but we were SO LUCKY. Our photographer felt like a great friend by the end of our wedding – he was the nicest guy, and it felt so comfortable having him around during the most personal and important moments of our lives thus far. I can’t say enough about finding someone you mesh with personally, as well as professionally.
