owls :

I know someone who lives in a house in the UK that has Tudor ( l mean real Tudor, ie pre 1603)  parts to it . Old is relative isn’t it!

I love old homes, especially those built around 1900-1920s. The woodwork (especially ornate staircases), stained glass, and fireplaces win my heart every time – but I struggle with the small kitchens. So, an upkept old home with a nice kitchen is my ideal.

I’m not opposed to building my own home someday, but it’s going to cost a lot since I want to hire the quality craftsmen to create those details I love so much in older houses.

owls :  many of the old houses (not really that ‘old’ since it’s a relatively young city, but still) are geared towards catching the breeze and providing shade. So they are built on stilts on big blocks and have loads of louvres, verandahs and eaves, big trees etc. Whereas a lot of the modern ones are built as if the climate is cold for some reason and have windows that don’t fully open, no hope of catching a breeze, walls that soak up the sun etc. Just not sensibly designed at all but I guess they must be cheaper to build.

New house. My house was just completed at the end of July and it was built to be exactly what I wanted. I gravitate to sleek, minimalist, modern styles so older homes just don’t do that for me. I can appreciate “character” when I am in an older home, but it just doesn’t suit me.

owls :  I prefer the look and feel of older houses, however for practicality reasons, we are planning to buy new.

We will be on 1.5 wages, so new means we don’t need to budget for unexpected repairs or renovations for 5+ years.

We also plan for this to eventually be a rental, so we will keep finishes cheap and low-maintenance.
