@SapphireSun:  Shame on those people for not showing up. I get so angry when I hear those stories. They must realize it costs couples money for food even if they don’t show up.

Reading this post made me seriously reconsider some of the things I was spending money on!
I have decided to ditch my 400.00 super fancy invites and go with the ones that were LESS THAN 50.00! I just got them and TBH I am thrilled. Sure they aren’t my super awesome amazing suites with crystals, etc… But for 50.00? Seriously? That makes me feel WAY better ๐Ÿ™‚

I also was thisclose to signing a contract today for video and though I’m not going to shut the door on it completely, I’m wondering if someone can just record it in the audience (not a family member, close friend?) I don’t really care about the fancy-schmancy effect, I just want to capture that memory so I can rewatch it. It just seemed way too expensive (800.00 for just the ceremony)

I got Save the dates and I feel like they were a waste of money (120.00 for 40 of them) but they were SO cute (boarding passes!) for they are for a destination wedding, which is probably the one time you want to do a Save the date…. BUT.. I mean, everyone who is invited has been told in person, y’know?

I am going to get menus because it’ll be a plated seated dinner and I want them to know what they will be getting into when they sit down. But I will do them through vistaprint (who I just got my invites through) So I’m sure they’ll be cost-effective.

Originally I wasn’t going to do favors because I found them to be a waste of money but I decided I might do favors because it’s a Destination Wedding and it’s a small less than 50 person wedding. I am going to wait until I’m there and see if I find anything that stands out at me.. One reason I may decide to do favors is because I know my mom is looking for things to help with and this would be something for her to help with ๐Ÿ™‚ (Right now she is just making the centerpieces, which is big I know, but I know she wants to do so much more..)

I will get cheap shoes (for me anyway!) ~40.00

I will not go cheap with hair & make-up. I will have a professional come to my hotel room.

I will not cheap on food or venue. In fact they go hand in hand. I went with my venue because I fell in love with it…. But they required a 6000.00 FOOD ONLY min.. Yikes.. For my small wedding (less than 50 ppl!) with their meals starting at 50pp that was going to be tough. I just decided to go for it and have super yummy food (100pp) ๐Ÿ™‚ We did recently decide to do long a cocktail hour (1.5 hours – with all our appetisers contibuting to that 6000.00 min) with 2 signature cocktails, beer and wine and then only beer and wine for the rest of the night. This was to cut back on costs of alcohol as well as keep the alcoholics from actin’ a fool. Originally I wanted fancy cocktails all night long but honestly, it’s just worth it. And everyone should be happy with beer and wine anyway.

I wasn’t going to do a seating chart and therefore not worry about the cost of doing place cards, etc. but the we decided some of our family shouldn’t sit together so it became inevitable. I would’ve rather not but I’ll probably be happy I did!

We are not doing a DJ because we can’t but I would’ve, if the venue had allowed it. Instead we will do the iPod thing, as well as possibly hire someone to come perform. I am worried about people being bored and honestly, I want it to be an experience/awesome night that I will remember forever.

I am doing DIY centerpieces. I desperately wanted huge floral arrangements but my venue is seriously gorgeous (huge room, tall ceilings, french doors, literally on the beach, overlooking the ocean!) So I decided that in going with my dream super awesome venue I had to give in on my florals ๐Ÿ™‚

I hate chair covers and love fancy chairs but I decided not to splurge on them. What I hate more than chair covers are ugly banquet chairs so I did decide to get the chair covers as well as fancy table linens.. My linens total are $$$ (800.00 for 50 chairs covers w/ bows, 50 napkins, 5 tables floor lengths as well as a band around the edge, 1 sweetheart table and 1 cake table) but they are seriously luxe red linens and I feel it’ll brighten up the room. Well worth it to me.

Jury is still out on: Limo, Uplighting (feel it will help with iPod dancing?), and Phototbooth (always wanted one!!!!)

I like this thread, because I’m desperately trying to stick to my budget, while still having the wedding of my dreams.  As it gets closer, and more and more money is going OUT, I’m looking for ways to either cut back/save or research things that wedding guests simply didn’t care about, despite how cool *I* i might think they are.

Things I am splurging on with the help of my parents: venue & caterer.  

Everything else I’m trying to do for under $5,000 (cake, photographer, dress, etc.)

  • no STD’s..I did a facebook STD event, and emails.  I know it’s not “proper” etiquette, but it seemed a little overkill with making/ordering something, plus postage when I’m going to be spending again on invites/postage in a few months

 

  • DIY invites for $80.  Realize I could have spent less on semi-DIY from Michaels, etc

 

  • glitter DIY a pair of shoes I already owned

 

  • flowers only for wedding party – DIY roses from Costco.

Things I’m starting to realize I need to get out of my mind:

  • different colored linens (venue provides white)

 

  • different centerpieces (venue provides large crystal vases/candles)

*I need to realize I picked my venue for a reason..that decoration needed to be minimal if not any (it is the inside of an old English manor that is already decorated)

  • elaborate favors for guests

 

I’m torn about: hair/makeup

@mrsvelezzz:  Definitely stick with the white that the venue provides, as well as the centerpieces! My venue didn’t provide ANY linens or centerpieces! Grr. You will be so happy with saving the money especially if you’re already thrilled with the venue.

Do you do your hair and makeup yourself in everyday life? I don’t… My hair is always in a ponytail and most days I don’t put any makeup on. That being said, I absolutely love getting my hair and makeup done so my wedding is a perfect opprotunity to go glam and splurge. I knew that I wouldn’t beable to do it myself.  If you do your own hair and makeup well, I’d say you could skip professional hair & makeup as well.

@S2013: Yeah..I’m sticking with the white and the centerpieces..I was killing myself trying to find different overlays, centerpiece ideas, etc..and then I realized that it was probably stupid and a waste of money if the venue already has them.  I think we as brides sometimes get caught up in all the stuff we see..the vision that’s been in our head or in these lavish weddings we see in pictures, tv shoes, etc.  I think now..are my guests really going to care if there are black overlays on the tables?  Or will white linens be fine?  yeah..stick with white!  Even if my colors weren’t white and black, I know I would stick with the white.

I didn’t really have a preference over chairs (no metal folding please!) but I didn’t even realize that my venue already has chiavari chairs.  Love the look of chair covers and sashes, but am NOT doing them due to expense and setup, etc.

I do my hair and makeup in real life..I have a ton of makeup/fake eyelashes, the works.  It’s one of those things I might need to get out of my brain..I would like to do it, just so I can feel pampered and less stressed out.  However..if I do my own (free) hair and makeup trials and like what I can come up with, then I’ll save myself the money.  I just want to make sure I look polished and perfect of course! lol

Well after my last post, things have since changed LOL

I added the items that I didn’t think necesary but that I wanted:

Chair covers (because fi just had to have them and I like them, but not bows).

Transportation (we actually just booked it today.  It’s a bus and we are so excited…a mini bus.  Fi is more excited than me and it was my idea. While it was not a necessity, it takes care of the logistics of how I would get to the ceremony and how to transport my oot guests without cars to both wedding locations.)

DJ (we just had to have one.  Fi’s DJ cousin is IN the wedding party so could not be our Dj and we wanted him to have fun at our wedding, not have to ‘work’.  However I saved big time on my DJ and since my father bought my dress, that money went to the DJ fund LOL).

Also, I am doing programs because I always wanted them and they are DIY.  And, while we changed the ceremony location to an actual venue, we’re still not spending much on decor: basically just a couple of paper lanterns and tissue paper pom poms and some ribbon tied at a few chairs.
